JACKSON OUTLASTS FIELD, POSSENECKER REPEATS, JANSEN SHINES FRIDAY AT WAGNER
Week number seven of the Fort Randall Casino and Hotel Weekly Racing Series saw plenty of action from start to finish, presented by Best Propane and Nedved Dirtworks of Wagner.
The Roth Custom Farming IMCA Hobby Stocks would be a race of attrition, with several cautions and mechanical issues. Once the dust settled, Dustin Jackson (O'Neill, NE) had stayed out of harms way, allowing him to win the event from the 12th starting spot. Another competitor that put on a show was Jordan Vosika (Gregory). Starting 10th on the field, Vosika had worked his way to the top five when he was collected in a yellow flag stoppage and was sent to the tail of the field. From then on, he avoided further concerns and drove all the way back to take an impressive runner-up finish. Mike Hanson (Meckling, SD) started ninth and finished third, Tony Fetterman (Elk Point) started 11th and came across in fourth with Tori Wendell (Butte, NE) starting 13th rounding out the top five. Heat races were won by Kaylb Brunssen (LeMars, IA), Dennis Powers (Avon) and Toby Ives (Verdigre, NE).
Round seven of the Schroeder vs Pfeifer duel in the Ponca Valley Seeds IMCA Northern Sport Mods was just as entertaining as the first six, as Dudley Schroeder, Jr (Armour) started sixth and Josh Pfeifer (St. Paul, NE) started in seventh. As has been the case all season long, these two veterans worked their way to the front of the field. Pfeifer kept the pressure on, but Schroeder, Jr was able to withstand all challenges to pick up his third victory of the season, doubling his point lead from one point to two. Following Schroeder, Jr and Pfeifer across the stripe were Matt Esterling (Sioux Falls), Kevin McCarthy (Naper, NE) and Jerry Pfeifer (Spencer, NE). Heat races were won by Schroeder, Jr and Kendall McCarthy (Naper, NE).
The DK Flooring and Customs IMCA Racesaver sprint cars made their return after a two-week hiatus, but the finish made it worth the wait. Jared Jansen (Sioux Falls) chased down the leader, then used a bold run off number four corner to pass Dennis Engelhaupt (Page, NE) to steal the checkers. Jansen, who started seventh in the event, found multiple ways around traffic to gain the victory, thus earning him $50 in bonus money with the Turp's Automotive Hard Charger award. Following Jansen and Englehaupt were Adam Walton (Atkinson, NE), Danny Nekolite (O'Neill, NE) and Shane Fick (Brandon) rounding out the top five. Heat races were won by John Otte (Ravinia), Daniel Frickel (Atkinson, NE) and Trefer Waller (O'Neill, NE).
The Payer Livestock IMCA Sport Compacts saw Conner Brown (Yankton) return to his winning ways, picking up his fourth win of the season. Jerik Stabler (Ethan) had his most impressive run of the season to hold off Taylor Brown (Yankton) for second, with Brown settling for third. Conner Brown also won his heat race.
The Mark's Machinery IMCA Stock Cars hit the track next and following nearly a year of being away from a race car, Dusty Poessnecker (Atkinson, NE) made it two in a row at Wagner. Poessnecker was able to slip by Joel Namminga (Avon) late in the race to see the checkers first, with Darwin Iedema (Geddes) taking top three honors. Greg Taylor (Sioux City, IA) and Brady Wenzlaff (Yankton) won their respective heat races.
Finally, the CHS/Farmer's Alliance Late Models made their return after a two-week absence and once the "Vogts" were counted, it was the former champion taking one from his brother. Brad Vogt (Pierce, NE) started inside row two and quickly made his way to the front. It looked like, for all intents and purposes, that Brad had the field covered, but there was another Vogt that demanded a recount. Four-time Wagner late model champion Gale Vogt (Yankton) made his first appearance at the track in 2021 and started his march to the front from the sixth spot. Once Gale caught Brad, it took numerous laps to find his way around. It looked to be a daunting task, but one small mistake by Brad, who slid up the track in turn two, opened the door and Gale waltzed right through for the triumph. Brad would have to settle for second, with defending champion Doug Tomka (Stanton, NE), Jared Hoerle (Chambers, NE) and Kyle Pecena (O'Neill, NE) rounding out the top five. Heats were won by Tomka and Pecena.
