JACK WILLIAMS, WILLIAMS SEPTIC, ENJOYING RETIREMENT

By
After 31 years, Jack Williams of Williams Septic has decided to retire and sell the business. Williams Septic was originally a company created by his brother, Rusty, and was ran out of Bon Homme. Rusty ran the septic business for several years before deciding that he would rather look for a different opportunity. It was perfect timing, Jack was working for the highway department and was looking for extra income, so he purchased the company from Rusty in 1991. What was supposed to just be an evenings and weekend second job, within six months became a full-time job. There was such a need and demand for septic services that he had to stop working for the highway department. When he bought the company, he moved it to his current location of Avon. Over the years, when Jack grew the business to include porta potties (which he sold that portion of the business to Dennis and April Powers in 2015), he also had to add an employee, but otherwise Jack was the owner and sole operator of the business. Williams Septic offered many services including pumping mud pits, pumping hog confinements, cleaning septic tanks, porta potties, and water jetting. Jack provided services within a 50-mile radius of Avon including the communities of Wagner, Pickstown, Lake Andes, Mission Hill, Menno and Yankton. Jack’s favorite part of his job was getting to meet different people and being able to talk with his customers. His official last day on the job was December 1st of 2023. Jack not only retired but was able to keep the business in the family. Jack sold the business to his daughter, Shona and her husband Travis who will be continuing to service the local communities. Now that Jack is officially retired, he is not sure exactly what he will do with all his newfound free time. He and his wife, Sheila, plan to stay in Avon. One thing he knows for sure is that he will be spending much of his free time with his grandchildren which will probably involve some traveling. Jack and Shelia have three daughters. Sheri is located in Pierre, Shona and her family just moved to Avon from Colorado Springs and Shelby is in Montana. Jack does plan to stay busy and hopefully those busy activities will include his hobbies of hunting for pheasants and coyotes and fishing for walleye and cat fish. Jack does have some final advice for people about their septic systems. He says to keep it serviced as a rule of thumb every two years to avoid costly problems. Congratulations Jack on your well-deserved retirement. Thank you for all your years of service to the local communities.
