Do you have a youth ages 5-18 who is interested in poultry or rabbits? Now is the time to get those projects started! The Bon Homme County Rabbit & Poultry Club is ready to help if you are new to small animal projects in 4-H. For poultry enthusiasts, Achievement Days classes range from purebred exhibition poultry, layer pens, or meat pens. Time is of the essence here so that your poultry is fully feathered and in its best condition by Achievement Days in August. Our club members help newcomers by getting you in contact with breeders, giving advice on setup and care, and coaching on preparing your birds and yourself. Youth interested in rabbits also should be starting to contact breeders and working on finding a rabbit to show. Rabbits must be purebred and tattooed.
Youth working in this project area can learn so much: animal selection and care, responsibility, genetics, sportsmanship, self-confidence, how to present themselves and their animals to a judge, etc. It is a fun and worthwhile project!
Rabbit and Poultry Club will meet on Thursday, February 15 at 7 p.m. at the 4-H Center in Tyndall. Anyone interested in learning more about this project area is welcome to attend! If you are interested but can't make the meeting, please contact the project leader, Sara Schott, at saraschott33@gmail.com.
