Christmas is upon us, and the sounds of Christmas could be heard at Avon School on December 9 at the Winter Concert. Band Director Mataya Larsgaard tried to pick challenging songs for the students but also pick songs that they would like. She had songs with a variety of different key changes, tempo changes and time signature changes. She put the jr. high and high school together for one song so they could have the opportunity to collaborate and listen to each other. This is a great motivation for the jr. high instrumental students.

The Jr. high band songs were “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” Arr. by Michael Story and “Diary of a Grumpy Elf” by Timothy Loest.

For the high school band, Larsgaard’s favorite was “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” The other songs that they performed were “Carol of the Bells” by Katherine Davis; “Greensleeves” by Robert W. Smith; and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” Arr. by John Moss. The hardest song to teach was “Greensleeves” because it was definitely the most challenging song out of the four pieces.
