The Wagner Varsity Softball team headed to Gayville-Volin for their season opener on Thursday March, 30th. The combination of nerves and excitement were evident amongst the girls and coaches for this first game. The excitement soon pushed ahead of the nerves and the girls slid into a 2-0 lead over the Gayville-Volin Raiders with some confidence and determination in the box to get things started in the top of the 2nd.
The chatter in the dugout was hard to beat when Rayvn Medricky started her batting debut with a solo homer. Brylie Link’s walk and Braxton Nedved’s reach on error gave us some baserunners which resulted in a nice RBI by Kayden Zephier.
Both teams played some tough defense as the wind picked up and the temperature started to drop. There were a couple of quick 3 out innings, but then Gayville-Volin rallied back in the bottom of the 5th to go ahead 2-5.
Lydia Yost, Libby Kotab, Sydney Cournoyer, and Aubrey Medricky each had a hit along with Ravyn Medricky’s double to stay in it until the end, but Gayville-Volin held on for an 8-3 victory.
Lydia Yost pitched all seven innings for the Wagner Raiders and faced 30 batters. She fought hard and hung tough in the brutal temps striking out nine and only walking four batters.
Wagner Raider Softball will host Beresford for their home opener on April 10th at 4:00 in Wagner.
