HUCK FINN DAY AT WAGNER LAKE

By
Jerry Seiner

The annual Huck Finn Day Fishing Derby sponsored by Wagner’s VFW Post 7319 was held on Sunday, June 30 at Wagner Lake. The hot temperature and light winds made for an uncomfortable afternoon of fishing for the kids and parents that braved the weather.

Post members organized the fishing tournament for kids in Wagner and the surrounding communities. The fishing began at 1:00 p.m. and ended at 3:00 p.m., with free hot dogs and chips offered to the participants. Only about 20 kids between the ages of one and fifteen registered for the event. Cash prizes were awarded for the biggest fish caught in each of three age groups for boys and girls. $20 was given for first place, $15 for second and $10 for third.

The Grand Prize for the biggest fish caught was a bicycle for a boy and a girl. One of the bicycles was donated by the Dante Lake Club and the other by VFW Post 7319.

A drawing was held for children one to three for two kiddie bikes, which were donated by the Bastemeyer family in memory of Sue Bastemeyer.

Two volunteers from the Wagner Fire Department, Jason Von-Eschen and Richard Kokesh, were on hand to assist Jerry Seiner with registration and weighing of the fish. Dennis Clemens and Mark Roberts warmed up and served the hot dogs for the kids and their families.
