Visitation for Gregory Whiteley, of Avon, will be Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 2 to 3:30 PM at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Avon. Burial is in the Tyndall Cemetery. Peters Funeral Chapel in Avon is in charge of arrangements.
Gregory Whiteley was born April 27, 1957 in Oakland, CA, the son of Robert and Rita (Fletcher) Whiteley. He died Sunday, April 14, 2024 at the Avera Dells Area Hospital in Dell Rapids.
Greg graduated from Castro Valley High School in California in 1975. He started working for the Oakland Police Department as a dispatcher. He the went to the Freemont, CA Police Department where he served as a Police Officer. He later became a homicide detective.
Greg married Maureen Heather Bloom in 1994 in Freemont, CA. He retired on June 29, 1994. They bought the family farm north of Avon, SD. Greg loved his farm. He loved gardening and all of the animals. He was also an avid collector. They purchased the Avon Corner Bar and ran it from 2000-2005. They enjoyed visiting with and getting to know everyone.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife Maureen of Avon; parents Bob and Rita Whiteley of Mitchell; brother Larry (Jennifer) Whiteley of Eagle, ID; sister Joanne (Bret) Hamyln of Sioux Falls; brother-in-law Daniel Bloom of Avon; several nieces and nephews.
Greg was preceded in death by his grandparents; mother and father-in-law; and sister-in-law Regina Malka Bloom.
