Greer Unit #11 American Legion Minutes

American Legion Greer Post #11 held its monthly meeting on November 21, with 37 members in attendance. Chaplain Don Kotab gave the invocation which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion was recited by all members. Commander Rados then called the meeting to order.

Minutes – Assistant Adjutant Mark Wiechmann read the minutes of our last meeting. Minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer’s Report – Treasurer Dan Gruenewald gave the treasurer’s report. The treasurer’s report was approved as presented.

Americanism – Americanism Officer Don Kotab gave his report.

Service Officer – Service Officer Merle Stone gave his report.

Baseball – No report Legion Riders – No report Bingo – Bob Kucera stated that the turnout for Bingo has been very good. The new machine has been working very well. Volunteers were found for the upcoming Sunday Bingo sessions at the Post.

Veterans Service Officer – Veterans Service Officer Jerry Seiner spoke about the Wreaths Across America program. The wreaths will be placed on December 14th. Jerry also noted that he will be leaving for Arizona on December 20th for the winter.

Old Business – Commander Rados gave a report on the flag retirement ceremony at the Wagner school. He stated that the ceremony went well. Commander Rados also reported that we had a good turnout for the District 8 fall meeting held here at the Post on October 27th. Flags were posted for Veterans Day with discussion following on the handling of the flags. Amanda Bechen is still working on our non-profit status with the IRS. The Auxiliary is asking for ornaments for a Legion Christmas tree to be placed at the Capitol in Pierre.

New Business – Commander Rados handed out the 5-year increments badges for continuous membership in the Legion to the members who had not received them yet in the mail. Discussion was held regarding the need for a new 7-cubic foot freezer for the Post. A motion to buy a new one was made and passed. The purchase of a new one will be addressed.

The Parade of Lights will be held again this year. The Post will need some volunteers to set up on December 6th. The swimming pool committee will serve lunch and host Bingo after the parade to help raise funds for the pool here at the Post.

Sweepstakes planning time is here again. The drawing will be on February 22nd at our yearly sweepstakes dance. A motion to hire John Havranek again for sound and entertainment was approved.

We received a thank you from the Wagner VFW for the use of our Post for their annual Veterans’ Dinner along with a donation. A thank you card and donation was also received from Karen Petrik for our Post’s Honor Guard at Tom’s funeral. A thank you was received from Terry and Pat Zolnowsky to the many heroes of Post 11. A thank you and donation from the “Schroeder girls” (Kathy Wens, Patty Markley, Chelle Muilenburg, and Peggy Nedved) in honor of Jack Kuhlman was also received.

A letter was received from the South Dakota American Legion Veterans Affairs Volunteer Services Committees for individual donations as well as volunteers to aid their programs helping Veterans in South Dakota.

Jacob Kucera was the monthly drawing winner with the winnings donated back to the Post. Chaplain Don Kotab gave the final blessing and we closed in due form.
