Greer Post #11 American Legion
Greer Post #11 American Legion held its monthly meeting on June 20, 2019 at the post home. Commander Robert Kucera called the members to attention. Chaplain Donald Kotab gave the invocation, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. All members recited the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion.
Guests were members of the Bob Soukup Family and this year’s Boys Stater's.
Jared Soukup, grandson of Bob Soukup went on the Midwest Honor Flight to Washington on May 6th, it was the 700th Honor Flight. Jared gave an awesome report with film of what they all saw. They left Sioux Falls at 4:30am and their first stop was Arlington National Cemetery where there are 400,000 tombstones. Next was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Then the Air Force Memorial, World War II Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial and Marine Memorial. They had a very good time and recommend all veterans to go on a honor flight. They had airplane troubles coming home, was supposed to get to Sioux Falls at 8:30pm, but got there at 1:30am.
Boys Stater's Chance Blaha, Corbin Johnson and Grant Namminga reported on their experiences at Boys State. They started with Memorial Day Services. They were up at 7am for Flag Ceremony every morning then they did PT. Tues was about City government. They were mayors of a city. Wed was about county offices, each elected to a county office. Thurs was about state elections; each was elected as a Senator, Representative or Supreme Court Justice. They had Boys State Olympics. They were done at 2pm on Friday. They all had awesome things to say for Boys State.
Commander Kucera thanked the cooks for a delicious meal. Adjutant Clayton Rados read the minutes of the May meeting, which were approved as read. Treasurer Dan Gruenwald distributed a financial report for the month of May to all members, which was approved as given.
Americanism: Don Kotab reported Boys Stater's were here for supper and reported on their experiences at Boys State. Next month we will have the students who received Legion Scholarships.
Baseball: Jerry Seiner reported junior legion team is doing well; they have a tournament this weekend.
Service officers: Merle Stone gave sick call and relief.
Legion Riders will try to have a brat feed at Super Foods on a comingFriday. They have abig ride to Canada coming up in August.
John Havranek reported Wagner Speedway will have a military and First Responders Night on August 9th. We are to Post the Colors. We will take Legion Jeep to Menno’s 4th of July Parade. State convention in Sioux Falls was reported on. Bob Kucera was on Resolution Committee. Jay Youngbluth was on Employment Committee and Merle Stone was on credentials committee.
Vice Commander; Dennis Clemens reported Michael and Willa Kirwan donated $100 to our Legion in Honor of their son Micky Kirwan who was in Special Forces.
David Isebrands was awarded a Commanders Pin for being on the Honor Guard.
Thank you's from Joanna Soukup, Britney Krcil, Kristyn Roth and Haley Drapeaux for the $500 scholarships they received from The American Legion.
New State Commander, Fred Nelson will have his homecoming June 29th at the High Plains Western Heritage Center, in Spearfish, Social at 1:30pm and program at 2pm.
Jerry Seiner thanked Legion Members for putting up the flags in City Park on Memorial Day and Flag Day. He will let us know when to put them up for July 4th.
Bob Soukup thanked the Legion and his grandson for the chance to go to Washington on the Honor Flight.
Chaplain Don Kotab gave the final prayer. The meeting was adjourned in due form.
