Greer Post #11 American Legion held its monthly meeting on March 21st, 2019 at the Post Home. Commander Robert Kucera called the members to attention. Chaplain Donald Kotab gave the invocation, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion was recited by all members.

Guests were Vern Sip’s son-in-law, Paul Schoenfelder and his Grandson, Zachary Schoenfelder, who joined Wagner’s Sons of the American Legion.

Adjutant Clayton Rados read the minutes of the February meeting which were approved as read.

Commander Kucera thanked the Auxiliary for the delicious meal and 100th Anniversary cake of the American Legion.

Committee reports were given as follows: Treasurer Dan Gruenwald distributed a financial report for the month of February to all members, which as approved as given. Americanism: Don Kotab reported four Junior students applied for Boys State which will be held Mary 27th through May 31st at Northern State University. The four Boys Staters are Chance Blaha, Preston Nedved, Corbin Johnson and Grant Namminga. Greer Post #11 will sponsor two of the boys and Wagner Rotary Club will sponsor the other two boys.

Baseball: It was reported that students may want to be on a Junior American Legion Baseball team. It was decided to call Sudan back to check on ages for each team. Bingo: Commander Kucera reported Bingo has been pretty good, with one more week to play, March 31st. Service Officer: Merle Stone gave sick call and relief.

Commander Kucera reported Spring District #8 meeting is March 24, 2019 at Yankton Post #12 NFAA Building at 2 p.m. with a light lunch after.

Rick Zolnowsky and Dennis Clemens replaced counter tops on north cupboards; looking good. Adjutant Rados reported 30th Annual Sweepstakes was very successful. Grand Prize winner, Dave Hubbs of Yankton, donated $2,500 back to our Legion and will donate the other half to local projects and organizations. Thank you very much! I would like to thank all Greer Post members that sold tickets and worked at the Sweepstakes bar and lunch stand. Also, thanks to the community and surrounding area for their support and purchasing Sweepstakes tickets.

Thank you cards were received from Eleanor Anders and Roland Crisman for the prizes they won from the Sweepstakes. A very nice thank you card and $150 donation was received from the Merkwan and Kelly families, for Military Honors for Norman Kelly.

Dennis Clemens reported if you go to a different doctor, your doctor must fax a form to the VA. Vietnam and Era Veterans are having a reunion at Deadwood gulch in Deadwood on April 27th. They will have a Vietnam Memorial dedication at the Black Hills National Cemetery.

American Legion are in charge of this year’s Memorial Day Services.

Commander Kucera reminded us next month we have election of offiers. Greg Geiman, District #8 Commander reported dues, which are 10¢ per member, are due at Spring Convention. We have 183 members so far this year.

Greg is also looking for a Post to host Boys State orientation after May 1st.

Chaplain Don Kotab gave the Final Prayer.
