American Legion Greer Post #11 held its monthly meeting on February 19 with 25 members in attendance. Commander Rados thanked tonight’s cooks for the delicious dinner. Chaplain Don Kotab gave the invocation which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion was recited by all members. Commander Rados then called the meeting to order.
Minutes – Acting Adjutant Mark Wiechmann read the minutes of our January 2026 meeting and the minutes were approved as read.
Treasurer’s report – Danie Gruenewald gave his treasurer’s report which was approved as given.
Americanism – Americanism Officer Don Kotab stated that continual efforts are being made to find Boys State attendees for this year. So far, there has been no interest in the Trooper Academy program.
Bingo – Bingo Officer Paul Kucera stated that Bingo has been well attended. The following have volunteered to help on the coming Sundays: February 22 Tony Krcil-Ron Kahler, March 1 Melvin Horner-Dennis Clemens, March 8 Clayton Rados-John Stone, March 15 John Fuchs-Clayton-Rados.
Service Officer – Service Officer Merle Stone gave his report. Legion Riders – The Annual 605 Ride is scheduled to leave Pierre on June 4th. The riders will be in Wagner on June 8th and then back to Pierre. It will be their annual fundraiser.
Veterans Service Officer – No report. Baseball Officer – No report. Old Business – A moment of silence was observed for the passing of two of our members, Roger Frankenstein and Larry Holland. The Post did receive a memorial from the Frankenstein family in memory of Roger. The Legion Post purchased two $50.00 drawing tickets for the After Prom Party. Any winnings we receive will be donated back to the After Prom Party.
New Business – It was brought to our attention that the District 8 Oratory Contest needs funds. A ten cents per member donation was asked from each post in our district per member. It was moved and seconded to send $15.20 from our Post for this effort.
The 37th Annual Sweepstakes drawing will be held on February 28th starting at 7:00 PM. The worker schedules were handed out and the shift commander will be in contact with the committee members under him. Bures/Kronaizl will review our coverage at the next meeting. The Midwinter Conference will be starting tomorrow in Oacoma. Five members of our Post plan to attend. The District 8 meeting will be held in Vermillion on March 28. The South Dakota Vietnam Veterans reunion will be in Mitchell April 18-19th.
Vice Commander John Crisman brought to our attention an article in the Yankton newspaper concerning the VFW there. They are seeing future problems with membership loss. John sees our own Sons of the Legion organization as a great help to our Post membership, Monthly drawing winner was Dave Isebrands who was not in attendance. Chaplain Don Kotab gave the final blessing and we closed in due form.
