Greer Post #11 American Legion
Greer Post #11 American Legion, held its monthly meeting September 20, 2018 at the Post home. Commander Robert Kucera called the members to attention. Chaplain Don Kotab gave the i invocation which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion was recited by all members and Commander Kucera then declared the September meeting officially open.
Our guest Joseph Babcock transferred his membership from Lake Andes to our Post.
Adjutant Clayton Rados read the minutes of the August meeting, which were approved as read.
The cooks for the evening were given a nice round of applause for the excellent Swiss steak supper that was served.
Committee reports were given as follows: Treasurer Dan Gruenwald: The financial report for the month of August was distributed to all members. Americanism: Don Kotab reported oratory contest details can be gotten on your computer at Legion.ord/oratorical. District 8 oratory contest is in Yankton Public Library January 12 at 10 a.m. State oratory contest is February 10 in Spearfish.
Service Officer: Merle Stone reported several get well and sympathy cards have been sent out during the month.
Legion Riders: Dave Isebrands reported 24 Legion Riders went on the Labor Day ride to Geddes, Platte and Gregory. Several rode in the Labor Day Parade.
Jerry Seiner thanked Legionnaires, their wives, family and friends who helped run the Labor Day stand and all who helped in anyway. He thanked all who made and brought ice for the pop coolers. Jerry thanked everyone who helped put up and take down flags int he City Park.
Jerry also has raffle tickets for VFW Post Raffle. Drawing is November 11 at the Veteran's Day Banquet.
Jay Youngbluth reported on the National Convention in Minneapolis, MN. He received a nice ribbon for attending. He has several Boots on the Ground pins for Vietnam veterans, very interesting convention. Three Dog Night played one night at the convention.
American Legion is sponsoring a float in the Rose Bowl Parade. Tickets are available to go to the Rose Bowl Parade, they are $799/ ticket. They will leave December 29 and stay four nights, must apply for a ticket by September 28. Contact Jay Youngbluth.
Dennis Clemens reported we should get new counter tops in our kitchen, will get bids.
Commander Kucera reported District #8 fall meeting will be Saturday, September 29 at Marion, social hour 1 p.m., and meeting 2 p.m.
Jerry Seiner reported Wagner School would like a different morning program for students before Veteran's Day program.
He has several ideas to work on. They will retire flags after the program.
Jay Youngbluth reported we need to renew our tax exempt status. Jerry will apply when he does the VFW application.
John Havranek thanked the Legion for helping sell 50-50 tickets and posting colors at the Wagner Speedway races.
American Flags for the Park need to be looked at for repairs.
Chaplain Don Kotab then gave the final prayer and the meeting was declared adjourned.
