GETTING TO KNOW EDWIN YOUNG SR., NEW CHIEF OF POLICE

By
Alyssa Mathis
If one is a resident of Avon, then he or she has probably noticed a new face patrolling the town’s streets. This is because Avon has a new Chief of Police, Edwin Young Sr. Young began his work with the Avon Police Department on November 25. Young has been in the law enforcement field for the past 28 years, starting in 1996. Young was born and raised in Rosebud. During the latter part of his teenage years, his family moved to Nevada. Young graduated from high school in Owyhee, NV in 1992. He then joined the United States Army and was stationed at both Ft. Eustis and Ft. Story, VA until he was honorably discharged in 1995. Young’s first job in law enforcement was with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. His entire career has been with Indian Country law enforcement agencies. Young has worked for agencies that have had as many as 30 employees to a duty station or as few as one. When asked why he wanted to go into a law enforcement career, Young said that he is second generation law enforcement. His dad was a Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) police officer that served the communities where his family lived. Young grew up watching his dad be active in community service programs, which gave him a desire to serve as well. Young enjoys helping others whether it be helping community members or other law enforcement officers and agencies. Becoming a part of the Avon Police Department will be Young’s first opportunity to work for a city or state agency. He believes that he can bring some new ideas to Avon and his position during this transition. Young has been a part of the Avon community since February of 2024 as a resident. He has enjoyed living in Avon and wanted to be able to work in the community that he was living in. Even though he is relatively new to the department, one thing that he has really enjoyed since taking the job is the working environment. The City of Avon and its residents have been very welcoming and encouraging to Young since he took the position. As of right now, Young is the only officer for the City of Avon. In the future, he hopes to get to explore the possibility of another position being available in the department whether it be full or part time. He has not been on the job long enough to really see or determine any “big” issues that may be facing Avon. He has had several residents voice their concerns to him and he plans to address those issues. When asked what his job duties as Chief of Police for Avon are, Young said to ensure the safety and security of those who reside or visit Avon by actively patrolling and responding to service calls. He also sees that it is a responsibility of his position to maintain accountability for his department. For Young’s duty hours, he was given free liberty to choose his hours as well as outside of those regular hours, he is also on call to respond to anything that may arise in the community. A typical day for Young is trying to spend some time in the office to get up to speed on what the previous chief of police was working on. When he is not in the office, Young is out patrolling the streets of Avon. Young is the father to five children who are all grown and starting families of their own. He has four grandchildren, with one on the way. When asked what his hobbies or interests are, Young said that he does not have any as he has always been busy with work and never really had free time. Congratulations on your new position as Chief of Police and welcome to Avon.
