FORGET ABOUT CHISLIC AND TRY FRIED DILL PICKLES

Weather Watch

Did you ever notice that there is a country song that will fit just about any occasion? For instance, after we received six or seven inches of rain in two days last week, someone said, “Now I’ve seen everything.” And country great Randy Travis would sing: “I come from the country and I know I aint seen But I’ve heard the ocean’s salty and the stars they sometimes fall”.He goes on to tie it all together and by the time he’s done, we have a pretty fair love song to sing for karaoke.

Speaking of karaoke, (and you knew I would) we had a good time in Mayfield last Friday. The audience was small and the singers were few, which meant it was the perfect time to break in some new material. At times like these, I like to find some gospel songs that will mix in with some fifties/sixties rock and roll. There is a huge amount of material out there from guys like Tennessee Ernie Ford, Little Richard, etc that qualifies. Listen, if they can deep fat fry dill pickle spears and sell them as appetizers, I can mix gospel and rock and roll. Did you ever try those fried dill pickles? You should put them on your ‘bucket list’ as they are really kind of good.

I’m going to take a chance and divulge some news that I received last week. To start with, I’ve had some trouble with having to rub my left eye to try and make it focus. Marianne finally took me to the eye doctor and the doc diagnosed my eyes as having cataracts. Here’s where taking a chance comes in. The optometrist said this was not a serious operation so I decided to have it done. Now that that decision has been made, I hope I don’t hear from some friend who will detail everything that might possibly go wrong. I’m awful fussy about my eyes so I really hope and pray that things go right when the time comes for that surgery. As a side note, how somebody can put contact lenses in their eyes is beyond me. Anyway, I have to pass a physical and then they will operate on one eye late in October and the other one week later.

We had a good time and some good food at the Golden Agers dinner the other night. How long has it been since you’ve had a meal featuring turkey and all of the trimmings? I bet it’s been awhile, so I am going to announce that the Christmas season has officially started with the first turkey dinner of the fall. ‘Turk’ Peterka and I take turns as emcees at this annual event, and this year was my turn. We arrived just a little late, but not to worry, Turk had already warmed up the crowd and it was time to eat. I then took over and did all of the things I was supposed to do. It was a fun evening and we had almost all of these ‘seventy plus’ citizens home and in bed by their usual time. When they presented me with a check for being emcee, I quietly asked if I had to share it with Turk. They shook their heads no and somebody said, “What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” Now if you believe that last part about the check, I would like to talk to you in private about my shares in the Brooklyn Bridge.

Well, let’s talk some weather. I think we’ve had the last of the 90 degree temps for the year, and the monsoon season must surely be over as well. That means we should have traditional fall weather with drying conditions, frost around the middle of October, followed by Indian Summer. Mostly we need those drying conditions, and that should happen this week. Right now, it looks like forever before we can get back to farming, but we may be surprised.
