FIRST YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL SEASON ENDS

By
Coach Jessa Mccarthy

The Wagner Red Raiders finished their season with a tough loss to Elk Point Jefferson in the Sweet 16 with a final score of 1-14. Going in as the 8th seed battling against the 9th seed, we knew we were in for a good game.

The Raiders struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Huskies early in the game letting 2 runs score in the first inning and 7 in the second. Starting the bottom of the second inning Brylie Link was up to bat, she battled her way on base with ball 4. While on base, B Link advanced to second after an attempt to be picked off by the catcher and after a wild pitch made it to 3rd base. Lydia Yost hit a dinger past the right fielder for a triple. B Link scored our only run for the game on the same play. Next up to bat was Braxton Nedved, with L Yost on third. While trying to score another run, L Yost got picked off in a pickle ending the inning with the final out. The remaining innings the Raiders struggled with errors leaving the Huskies scoring more runs. There were some great defensive plays including a dropped in field fly which resulted in a great throw to Emma Yost at home for the final out in the 4th.

With this being the first year of sanctioned softball the girls had a competitive season and finished strong with an 8-6 record. The Wagner Red Raiders will miss their seniors, Emma Yost and Angelita Zephier. Thank you to everyone that has contributed to this season.
