FIRST GRADERS PERFORM OWL EXPERIMENTS
In the past few weeks Mrs. Benita Kuhlman’s first grade class has been very busy. They have learned all about owls, made owl pictures, did an experiment about owls, and even made owl cupcakes.
The first graders learned that there are over two hundred kinds of owls. They learned that owls are nocturnal raptors that can only see straight in front of them, which is why they can turn their necks so far. The class also learned about owl feathers, and how they are used as camouflage and that they are oviparous which means they are born in eggs. They learned that owls' nails are called talons.
In their owl experiment, each group was given an owl pellet. They had to first predict whether their owl had eaten a rodent or a bird. Once their prediction was made, they started dissecting and pulling out the bones. Lastly, they laid their bones on a sheet with pictures to try and match them to see if their owl ate a rodent or a bird.
When asked what else they learned, Zoey and Anna stated that they learned owls swallow their prey whole. Bode said he learned “that you do not eat the bones that you find while dissecting.”
All of the students had fun with this project. When asked what her favorite part was Oakliegh said she enjoyed “drawing the owl picture.” Netty said her favorite part was “eating the owl cupcakes that they made.”
