Tom Studelska was a pioneer in the sport of wrestling since the late 1950s. He was on the first wrestling team in Parkston in 1959. After high school, Tom played a significant role in starting wrestling at the University of South Dakota Springfield where he wrestled as part of the team for three years in addition to being a four-year letter winner in football.

After college in 1964, Tom started the high school wrestling program in Scotland. While coaching in Scotland, he coached his first state champion in 1971 as well as many state qualifiers during a time period when wrestling only had one class. Tom coached in Scotland until moving to Wagner in 1971.

After moving to Wagner, Tom was on the first committee that started AAU youth wrestling in South Dakota. Not only did Tom coach the high school wrestling team, but he also established and coached the AAU program in Wagner. In 1974, Tom coached his first Wagner State Wrestling Champion. Consequently, due to his success at the AAU level, Tom coached 15 more young men to individual state wrestling championships. Tom officially retired from Wagner’s wrestling head coaching position after the 1984 season, but could not stay away from the mat for long. He returned as an assistant coach for Wayne Scherr. The coaching duo coached two Wagner Red Raider Wrestling State Championship Teams. Tom’s passion for wrestling passed on to his grandsons as well. He not only would take his grandsons, but other Wagner wrestlers on countless bus trips throughout the nation in order for them to participate in National wrestling tournaments. Tom’s countless hours and dedication to the sport of wrestling and his wrestlers has had a significant impact on Wagner’s wrestling program. Tom’s legacy continues as his grandsons, David and Alex, have taken over the wrestling coaching positions for Wagner. Tom’s passion for wrestling has also been passed down to his great-grandsons, whom he has the privilege to watch wrestle at the AAU level. Thank you, Tom, for all of your dedication to not only the Wagner wrestling team, but for wrestling in the state of South Dakota. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!
