Volunteer firefighter, Brian Janssen, has been with the Avon Volunteer Fire Department for over 40 years. Brian comes from a firefighting family. His dad, Don, and his brothers, Doug and Keith were all firefighters in Avon. Growing up, Brian watched his dad, Don, go to fires and help save and protect property and lives in the Avon community. It made Brian want to follow in his father’s footsteps and do the same thing for the Avon community.
When asked what are important qualities for a fire fighter to possess, Brian said he or she should always have safety on their mind and have good communication skills. These go hand in hand with what are the most important duties of a firefighter. Getting as much training as possible and training with your fellow firefighters so that you know what to expect from each other in order to be able to better work together. He is involved in several of the fire department’s events including the annual fundraiser and dance, fire prevention week and Toys for Tots.
Being a part of the Avon Fire Department for over 40 years, Brian has held several positions in the department. He is currently the 1st Assistant (second in command) and has held this position for the past 25 years. He has served as the truck foreman as well. Brian has also served as the secretary/treasurer for the fire district.
Brian takes fire trainings very seriously and attends as many as he can. He attends the annual state fire school in June, attends district fire school, and monthly trainings that the Avon department puts on. Brian also volunteers as a driver for the ambulance department. He is single, but does have nieces and nephews. When Brian is not busy volunteering his time, he is employed at Farmers Pride Cooperative. In his free time, Brian enjoys boating, fishing and snowmobiling.
Thank you, Brian, for your dedication to the Avon community
