10 Years Ago 2015 What started out with only a 1–3-inch snowfall accumulation expected over the weekend, ended up being over 6 inches that fell upon Avon. As Mayor Kevin Tjeerdsma was up for re-election there was the potential to have a mayoral election should someone run against him. Chad Odens was awarded the 2014 Dedication Award because of his service to Pheasants Forever. Kevin DeJong and Chad Odens were inducted into the South Dakota Long Spur Society of Pheasants Forever for having been on the chapter committee for 10 years or more of service. 35 Years Ago 1990 The volleyball girls won over Marty but lost to Wagner this week. January temps were between 35-45 degrees for daytime highs. The 7th and 8th grade girls won a championship at the YMCA Tri-state tourney. They beat Parkston, Gregory and Alpena. Leading scorers were Tara Roth, Rose Radack, Jennifer Winckler and Tami Rauch. Mike and Denise Hento had a new baby, Tanner, born on January 21st. Funeral services were held for Reka Burma, Edith Christjans and Tillie Trantina. 56 Years Ago 1969 The Easter Cantata started practicing Sunday at the First Baptist Church. Pirate Basketball was postponed due to weather. There were approximately 40 inches of snow so far during that winter. Poppe’s Medicine Chest carried a complete line of new greeting cards. The City requested citizens to shovel snow and chip ice from their sidewalks. The One Act Play was postponed to February 17th. 85 Years Ago 1940 Avon won the Bon Homme Co. Tourney cutting down the three largest towns, Tyndall 20-13, Scotland 32-15, and Springfield 26-24. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Koehn celebrated their 25th Anniversary. The ice harvest was on at Springfield near the ferry boat landing. A nine-pound baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Oorlog. Coach McGilvery and ten basketball boys were dinner guests in the Robert Griffith home. Specials at Smith’s Bakery: one dozen cookies for $0.08 and one dozen cinnamon rolls for $0.18. 110 Years Ago 1915 The Gustav Voigt sale was held in spite of the weather. Ralph Voigt had been laid up for the past five weeks with a fractured ankle. Leo Rauch and Dave Hebner were working in the harness shop. Mr. Ole Halverson and Miss Bertha Wepking were married on February 2nd. Dr. Greenfield’s mounted deer head arrived and was on display in the furniture store. The Clarion was 16 years old on February 1st.
