10 Years Ago 2015 Coach Tom Culver was to be inducted in the South Dakota Football Coaches Hall of Fame. District Board members for the Bon Homme Conservation District were James Koenig, David Walloch, Dennis Namminga, Stanley Hieb and Stanley Schuch. Carol Buke was honored with the Bon Homme County Conservation District Endowment award as she had worked for the Conservation District for 29 years. Avon School Board members were recognized for their dedication and service. Members included Jeff Tolsma, President Scott Van Gerpen, Travis Tjeerdsma, Mike Oorlog and Lori Cihak. 35 Years Ago 1990 Mr. and Mrs. Robert Eben were the parents of an adopted son named Aaron John. He was the 20th grandchild of Andy and Irene Eben. Avon Locker Specials – one pound of ground beef for $1.59; homemade bologna for $1.85; and home-grown turkeys for 89 cents a pound. 56 Years Ago 1969 Reverend Fred Penner was the new pastor at the Tyndall and Danzig Baptist Churches. Rouse 77 was the 6th Charles-Mix School to join the Avon School District. Kristi Morin and Dale Zimmerman were engaged. Mr. and Mrs. Don Sternhagen left for New York by plane in order for Sue Jayne to see a liver specialist. LeAnn Cihak and Don Hento were engaged. Peggy Brodeen was honored on her 11th birthday. The girls went bowling and then had supper at her home. 85 Years Ago 1940 The Avon Women Alumni held a special night for the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The women played a basketball game of yesterday’s stars. The two captains were Dorothy Muller and Laura Betz. Avon had a group of real sports and home talent was hard to beat. Vernon Smith took his first train ride to Tyndall with his grandfather, J.W. Van Gerpen. His parents autoed over to get him. Some girls helped Margaret Ann Janssen celebrate her 16th birthday at her home. License plates for 1940 were on sale. 110 Years Ago 1915 The Avon Clarion and Avon Merchants were having a Grand Piano Contest. People were asked to nominate their favorite lady in order to help her win the piano. Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Lorenz, a baby girl on January 8th. The temperature for the particular day of writing was 28 below zero. Mr. Garrit Fennema and Miss Gertie Knoll were married on January 11th.
