The Lady Pirates basketball team lost to Hartington Cedar Catholic 39 to 48 and later in the same week dominated their game against the Marty Braves winning 54 to 39. The boys’ basketball season was off to a rocky start losing to both Corsica-Stickney and Hanson the past week.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Santa was on the street on Saturday giving out candy to the young and old. Avon’s town team won 84-78 over Menno. Jay Weber had 24 points. They also won 96-80 over Wagner. Mike Mudder scored 36 points. Don Mudder was the leader in rebounds. Last week the temps were 22-20 below zero with the snow cover 6-8 inches. Senior Spotlight – Randy Reister – his most prized possession was his endless amount of knowledge.
56 Years Ago – 1968
Cattle were missing – Edwin Roth had 40 head of cattle stolen and 20 head of cattle stolen from Bill Kuhlman northwest of Wagner. Donna Berndt and James Sattler were engaged. The Debate A Team, Ron Brandt and Gregg Hubner won four and lost one. Michelle Muller and Linda Crouse won three and lost two. The B Team, Christie Peterson and Barbara Voigt won three and lost two. Also debating were Phillip Voigt, Scott Crouse, Gary Elliot and Ray Ridgway.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Avon boys won 27-16 over Lesterville. The Men’s Brotherhood of the First Presbyterian Church met on Thursday. The program opened with the Orchestra. The Brotherhood Quartet of Len Hebner, Milford Holm, Albert Bullock and Harlen Noen sang two numbers. The Eastern Star met at Yankton. Attending from Avon were Lillian Crosby, Lena Pier, and Grace Kiehlbauch. Woodrow Kelley and Allan Marek were members of the BHTC Chorus.
110 Years Ago – 1914
Mabel Koehn had a severe attach of “under the weather” last week. A fine daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Engel on Monday. Chas. Kenzie’s new house burned to the ground Tuesday.
