10 Years Ago – 2014 The Clarion did a story on Kenny Crouse who was then 91 and how he was believed to be the last survivor of WWII from Avon. Crouse was involved at the Battle of the Bulge. The weather was full of rain, sleet and snow, making for hazardous driving conditions with many trucks and vehicles ending up in the ditch. Part of the Avon Music Department entertained the Lions Club members with their spouses during the Lions Club Christmas dinner. Avon Students of the Month were Emily Harms and Wyatt Duncan. 35 Years Ago – 1989 The Pirate basketball team dropped 2 home games this week. Girls’ volleyball started on Saturday in Alcester. The senior citizens had a carry in dinner on Friday. Bingo was played and door prizes were given. Mary Bertus and Tom Manning were married on November 11th. Bears Northvue and Quick Stop – Super Gifts and Teddy Bears. Homemade soup and sandwich buffet on Saturday for $2.49. 56 Years Ago – 1968 Petitions called for an election to form a large school district around Avon were nearly ready. There were six Charles-Mix Districts voting on December 26th to dissolve and join Avon. The Mennonite School had their Christmas program December 16th. Mrs. Larry Pudwill was the teacher. The annual Fennema and Knoll Hereford Sale was January 11th at the Avon Sale Barn. Michelle Pier was honored on her birthday at the home of her grandmother. 12 girls helped her celebrate. 85 Years Ago – 1939 The First Baptist Church held a baptism for 11 people on Sunday followed by a farewell for the Pete Schroder’s who moved to Missouri. Nova Lite – There were 38 band members. The Glee Club was practicing Christmas songs. The English II Class was studying Shakespeare. The eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Vert Burma was thrown from a horse and was badly injured but improving. A barn and shed were destroyed by fire at the Harry Dyke place. The Cradle Roll Dept. of the German President Church had a Christmas party on Tuesday. 110 Years Ago – 1914 A baby show took place in Springfield. About 25 babies entered. Dr. Hollingsworth was one of the judges. Postmaster Schroder informed users of Red Cross Seals to place them on the backs of letters and packages. The Hornstra Harp Orchestra gave a dance at Perkins on Saturday night. An oyster supper was served. Everyone was invited. Red Cross Seals were on sale.
