10 Years Ago – 2014 Santa visited Avon during the Avon Chamber of Commerce’s Parade of Lights. Santa rode through the parade on the Avon Volunteer Fire Department’s truck. Alderman Don Kocmich resigned from the Avon City Council. Scott and Emily Schulz announced the birth of their twins Evelyn Rose and Cullen Gabriel. The Lady Pirates returned 11 to their basketball team for the 2014-2015 season. Coach Brad Poppe had been coaching the team for 20 years. Jeff Haenfler took over coaching duties for the Pirate’s boys’ basketball team. He is the fifth coach for the Pirates in four years. Lauren Sees placed first in the 12–13-year-old division of the Punt, Pass & Kick Contest at the Minnesota Vikings Team Championships. Devin Tolsma was named to the Elite 45 football team. Terry and Monica Schultz sold their business Schultz Redi Mix to Don Kocmich and Kevin Eben. 35 Years Ago – 1989 The grade school Operetta was held on December 7th. The new computer lab has 20 in room IBM computers. Jurrens Electronics held their 12th anniversary sale on 13-inch color televisions for $189.95 and Bearcat Scanners for $109.95. Funeral services for Allen Mudder were held on November 25th in Alcester. Margaret Franzen was at the First Presbyterian Church on November 28th. Keith and Julie Rothschadl had a new baby, Jenna, born on November 17th. Monday Reading Club was held at the library with Doris Voigt as the hostess. 56 Years Ago – 1968 The Winter Concert was held on Tuesday. Larry Lyngstad was the director. Henry Krcil had a farm auction on December 12th which included 39 head of cattle. 85 Years Ago – 1939 The PTA had their first meeting led by President Dorothy Muller. It was Father’s Day night. The men led the singing and program. The band mothers served lunch. Nova Lite News – New dorm members were Russell and Gerald Meyers. Bakery Specials on Saturday only were 1 dozen tea buns free with every 25-cent purchase at Smith’s Bakery. 110 Years Ago – 1914 Burns Drug and Jewelry Co. had a million gifts for Christmas. Any kind of doll a child could want, tree trimmings, games, toys, candy and nuts. Dr. Hollingsworth assisted the Wagner doctors in three operations this week. The Avon Mercantile received a big line of holiday goods. A Shadow Social was held at the Myrtle School. 14 pupils entertained. The second part was when 29 shadows were sold from 60 cents to $3. Miss Alice Kolberg was the teacher.
