Newly purchased Christmas lights by the Chamber of Commerce were put up on main street, just in time for the annual Parade of Lights. Amanda Reiff was named to the Great Plains All Conference Volleyball team; Randi Hento received Honorable Mention. Pirate football players that were named to the Great Plains All Conference team were Alex Balvin, Jacob Knodel, Logan Mudder and Devin Tolsma; John Kopp received Honorable Mention. Devin Tolsma and Logan Mudder were both named to the First 9B All-State Team. Zach Wynia, Logan Mudder and Devin Tolsma were all named to Academic AllState for football.
35 Years Ago – 1989
A special party celebrating the opening of the newest Mensch Greenhouse was held on Saturday. It was one of the most modern in the state. Batman edged out Superman as the biggest hero. All State Chorus members were Wanda DeJong, Nikki Ferwerda, Ross Romkema and Mike Voigt. Senior Spotlight – Christie Namminga – her HS highlight was being elected Student Body President. Shane Odens – liked corn dogs and Mr. B as a geography teacher.
56 Years Ago – 1968
The Pirates won their opener 68-36 over Marty. June Bosgraaf was engaged to Allen Namminga. Emil Sattler had a Farm Auction on November 30th. The Circle A Extension Club met at the home of Cleo Reiff. Cleo and Sandy Pier gave the lesson on herb and spice cooking. F. Weidenbach Specials – 3 dozen oranges for $1; 6 grapefruit for 59 cents; 2 pounds of wieners for 79 cents; and 4 cans of tuna for $1.
85 Years Ago – 1939
In the District Declam Contest in Gayville, Avon’s Milo Wepking received a Superior award. He received a medal and a trophy for the school and moved on to compete in the Region contest. Bettie Thesenga was given an Excellent with Evelyn Arneson and Alice Bochman both received a good rating. The German Class was studying prefixes and reading a novel in German. Mr. and Mrs. George Reiff were the parents of a baby boy born on Friday. Bill Jonkers, Ben Brandt and Glen Peterson left for Wisconsin looking for jobs. Arnold Sattler of Mitchell was home for a visit. Les Thesenga’s car was stolen in Aberdeen.
110 Years Ago – 1914
The ladies of Avon had their 4th lunch November 21st at the Commercial Hotel. Chicken sandwiches were two for five cents; two slices of Kucken for five cents; two doughnuts for five cents; and coffee for five cents. A basket social and entertainment was held at the Bangert School on December 4th. Dale Tribby of Omaha was at the Star Livery Barn on November 27th to buy good horses between five and nine years old.
