10 Years Ago – 2014
The first snowfall of the year hit, and neighborhood kids were seen building and defending their snow forts. This snowfall brought over five inches of snow over the course of the weekend. Amanda DeJong and Tyler Leighton were married. The Jolly Roger – Mr. Mel Fathke’s American Government class held a mock election to give students a taste of what voting and an election day was really like. Katelynn Marie Buchholz was featured in the senior spotlight. She said that she will be remembered for being called squidward and her favorite subject in school was psychology. Lea Wormsbecher and Jason DeJong were named Sr. High and Jr. High students of the month.
35 Years Ago – 1989
New teachers at Avon were Shelly Poppe – 1st grade; Sheri Schneider – 5-8th vocal music and Chapter Aid; and Rich Schneider – science and math. The Sweet Clovers 4-H Club met at the Doug Brandt home. Funeral services for Herbert Walkling were held at the Zion Lutheran Church on November 10th. The Avon Senior Citizens held their Thanksgiving dinner on Friday. There were 40 present. Julie Kocmick and Jay Mudder were married October 7th in Dante. Jason Thompson was honored on his 13th birthday.
56 Years Ago – 1968
Avon had an Independent League with a 9-game schedule. Number 1 team captained by Galen Nelson, Number 2 team by Dave Eggers and Number 3 team by Jim Sattler. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Jonkers were the proud parents of twin girls born November 8th. Their names were Karen and Karla. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pier entertained four tables of pinochle on Sunday evening.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Fire broke out in the Community Theater while the show was in progress. No one was injured. Miss Irene Swartz and Mr. William Cihak were married in Dante on Tuesday. Pastor Bartel was honored on his 49th birthday on Sunday evening at the church with a beautifully decorated cake. R.P. Burns Auto CO, were showing a new 1940 Chevrolet Town Sedan. It was a beauty. Revival services were held in December at the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
110 Years Ago – 1914
R. T. Berry was building a residence in the north part of town. The Presbyterian New England Supper had stewed chicken, potatoes, pickles, baked beans, brown bread, biscuits, rolls, donuts, cake, pie, cheese and coffee. The supper was 25 cents on November 24th at the church. Jonathan apples were $1.55 cents a box at the Fair Store. German services were held all last week at the Baptist Church. Nelson and Berry, road bosses, reported a good showing of workers for the three good road days last week.
