10 Years Ago – 2014 Avon’s All-State Choir participants were Randi Hento, Jacob Knodel, Joshua Knodel and Chloe Van Gerpen. Friedensberg Bibl e Church held its annual Fall Harvest Festival & Missionary Conference. A new office/shed for the wind farms was in its beginning stages with Schultz Redi Mix’s Terry Schultz and Reno Hamilton chopping through trees in order to make room for the building. A report from Camden Hofer of Smucker, Paul, Nohr & Associates said that according to their recent study, Avon was losing 36.2% of its water to water leaks, malfunctioning water meters and other outdated measures. Warrant Officer Kenneth Podzimek visited Avon’s preschool class to talk about the importance of Veteran’s Day. 35 Years Ago – 1989 New teachers at Avon were Denise Hento, high school English; Lori Hajek, Speech and Language Therapy; Brad Poppe, Business, PE, and Computers. The Avon Chamber Vegas Night was held. Open House for Elsie Mudder’s 85th birthday was held at the Auditorium on November 12th. 56 Years Ago – 1968 Sheriff Joe Maruska suffered a serious heart attack just two days after his re-election. Bowling scores: Neil Hornstra – 223; Clayton Fillaus – 204; and Carol Powers – 190. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Louis Podzimek. Diane Fees was honored at a bridal shower in Vermillion. Karen Johnson was engaged to Gary Sedivy. Bonnie Lagendyk was engaged to Keith Boese. 85 Years Ago – 1939 Elmer Pudwill had a serious accident when he hit two horses standing in the middle of the road. He was taken to the Yankton Hospital. The local declamation contest winners were: Dramatic – Evelyn Arneson; Poetry – Alice Bochman; Humorous – Bettie Thesenga; and Oratory – Milo Wepking. The Ping Pong Club met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Sieling. Mr. and Mrs. Herb Boepple and daughter autoed to Yankton to visit relatives. Riley Meyers boarded the train to the CCC Camp in the Black Hills where he will work. 110 Years Ago – 1914 Special – good sweet oranges for 19 cents a dozen while they last at the Fair Store. William Weber and Fannie Burfeindt were married at the bride’s home by Reverend Olthoff. The Ladies of the Presbyterian Church served a New England Supper on November 24th. Just arrived – a car load of woven and barb wire at the Ptak Lumber Yard.
