10 Years Ago – 2014
There was a good voter turnout at the polls in Avon with 425 out of 634 voters making it to the polls. Eight Tau members of the Delta Kappa Gamma met in Pickstown where Sue Isebrands gave a presentation about her seven-day educational trip with six of her Spanish students from Avon and Tyndall to Costa Rica. Jolly Roger – Juniors and Seniors in Mr. Kuhlman’s physics class took a trip to Worlds of Fun to see physics in real life. Heid i C ap wa s t he Cross-Country player of the week as she was the only team member that qualified for the state meet. Football players of the week were Devin Tolsma, John Kopp and the entire offensive line including Jake Knodel, Jesse Chambers, Josh Knodel, Zach Wynia and Sam Eben. Volleyball players of the week were Amanda Reiff, Livi Jurrens and Karisa Markel. Senior Spotlight was Breanna Berendsen who believes she will be remembered for waiting for her brothers every day after school.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Sally Powers was surprised on her 75th birthday with a party at the Legion Hall. Avon Locker Specials included: Old Home Bread for 69 cents a loaf; ground beef for $1.40 a pound; and they had many soups on hand. Bear’s Northvue welcomed hunters for the season with specials including: Friday night – chicken buffet for $3.99; Saturday night – all you can eat spaghetti buffet for $2.99; and Sunday night – Ribeye Buffet for $3.99.

In the election, Nixon carried the state. McGovern carried 57 percent of the state over former Governor Gubbrud for the Senate. The Grand Opening of Poppe’s Medicine Chest was set for November 9th. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Poppe took over the business from George Ulrich. The District Declam contest winners were: Dramatics – Chris Jurrens with a Superior; Poetry – Charmaine Muller with an Excellent; and Humerous - Philip Voigt with an Excellent. Robbies Corner Store Specials were five cans of peas for DO YOU REMEMBER? $1; eight cans of pork and beans for $1; and two pounds of coffee for $1.35.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Homecoming was set for November 10th. Lydia Bowen was the Queen. Crown and flower bearers were Richard and Jackie Pier. Pete Knoll moved into the boys’ dorm. There were ten boys in the dorm. Smith’s Bakery had rye bread for 9 cents a loaf. Miss Norma Doran attended the Sioux City Business College. The Couple Club was entertained at the Chester Steckler home with a wild goose dinner. The High School Latin Class was studying nouns and adjectives.
110 Years Ago – 1914
Friday was candidate day in Avon and the politicians were numerous and friendly. Avon Pennants were only 15 cents at Hagarty’s. Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Brandt were the proud parents of a daughter on Election Day. Arthur Voigt was greatly surprised when a group of 30 young people gathered at his home to celebrate his birthday. Mrs. Voigt’s SS class prepared a splendid surprise.
