10 Years Ago – 2014
The General Election was set for the following Tuesday. Over a dozen turbines had been erected over the past week with more popping up daily. A card shower was requested in honor of Sylvia Meiers’ 90th birthday and also Lauren and Sylvia Meiers’ 68th wedding anniversary. The city was experiencing more water problems as they were digging a new line from Don Mudder’s driveway south to the city street which led to residents waking up with water running down the street. Joe Stedronsky caught a ten-pound Lac Seul walleye. T he vol leyba l l a nd cross-country teams held their parents’ night.
35 Years Ago – 1989
The Pirates ended a dismal season losing to Bonesteel 21-6. Dan Ridgeway made the lone touchdown. The Girls Jr. High Basketball team won their tourney after 12 hours of competition on Saturday, eight schools competed. F u nera l ser v ices for Georgeanne Dykstra were held at the Avon School Auditorium. Services were held for Lena Radack on October 25th at the First Baptist Church.
56 Years Ago – 1968
The Grand Opening of the Poppe Medicine Chest was November 9th. Everyone was needed to vote in the General Election on November 5th. George McGovern was running against Archie Grubrud for US Senate. Ludd Bertsch rolled his 1963 Mercury but was lucky and escaped injury. Robbies Corner Store Specials – 6 cans of corn for $1; 5 bottles of catsup - $1; jumbo head of lettuce – 17 cents; 2 pounds of Cimpl’s wieners – 89 cents.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Three local boys, Herb Raabe, Steve Merkwan, and Ted Smith, were picking corn by Meckling when a wild goose that had been shot, fell near them. They retrieved the bird to the owner, Harry Craft. Craft was an active player with the Cincinnati Red and gave the boys autographed DO YOU REMEMBER? baseballs. Nova Lite – The Home Economics I Club elected Joan Muller as President; Bettie Thesenga as Vice-President; and Elgene Sattler as Secretary. Home Economics II President was Margaret Ann Janssen and Ruth Fathke was Vice President. T he B a nd m a rche d through Main Street practicing for the parade. Donald Fennema was a new member of the sophomore class. Homecoming was November 10th.
110 Years Ago – 1914
Corn husking was in full swing at the present. The Mennonite Singing Society reorganized and elected officers on Sunday. P.C. Unruh was the leader. The women of Avon served the men working on the Washington Road. They served 104 on Thursday and 89 on Friday at noon and supper. The businesses helped pay for supplies. Many sumptuous dishes were served. All of the rural schools were started.
