10 Years Ago – 2014
The Avon area was seeing some of the best crops in years with bean and corn piles building up. The annual Williams Pheasant Hunt was a success bagging 30 pheasants opening weekend. Jolly Roger – Players of the week were, in volleyball: Randi Hento, Kacie Mudder, Amanda Reiff, Sami DeJong, Hanna Powers and Karisa Markel; football: Devin Tolsma, John Kopp and Jacob Cihak; and cross-country: Emily Harms, Carter Fillaus and Brenden Voigt. The Avon school had a new student, Tristony Breanne McDaugale. Senior Spotlights included Marissa Diede and Amanda Reiff. Marissa’s favorite place to visit was the river. Amanda’s favorite place to visit was California. Heidi Cap qualified for the State Cross Country Meet.
35 Years Ago – 1989
The school had a discussion on whether or not to play the last football game of the season. The team, after injuries, is down to just 10 boys and several are small underclassmen. It was left up to the coach. Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Thompson have a new girl, Kristina Jo, born on September 22. The First Presbyterian Women met for an all-day sewing meeting; 5 quilts were tied. A pot luck dinner was served. Senior Spotlight- Angela Burma – she likes lobster and drinking a Raspberry Sunday. Dennis Bares – he likes his 1968 blue Chevy.
56 Years Ago – 1968
The pheasant count is “way down”. The Pirates got their 5th win beating Armour 21-12. The Jr. High football team won the first game ever by a junior high team in Avon. They won 13-6 over Tyndall with an eight-man team. Ron Pelton had a five-yard plunge and a 45-yard dash to score. Jolly Roger News – The Jr. and Sr. Play, “Boys and Ghouls Together” was held November 18-19. FHA Meeting was held in Mrs. Peterson’s room. The First Presbyterian Youth Group had a hay ride for 26 members and their guests. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Sternhagen pulled the hay rack.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fillaus of Dante celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Buchholz and Meredith were visitors in Yankton. Gus Robsor, “Rattlesnake Pete” was in Avon on Tuesday. He was one of the oldest SD residents. Mission Day was held at the Zion Lutheran Church on Sunday; 3 services were held. Mr. and Mrs. Garrett Fennema and son, Donald, and Garrett Knoll returned from California where they were managing a dairy farm.
110 Years Ago – 1914
The Fair Store Specials – one pound of salmon - 10 cents; four packages of corn flakes – 25 cents; three bars of soap – 10 cents; cotton bats – 9 cents. J.W. Steckman had the basement for his new country house finished and is ready for the carpenters. Siegle Green had his new modern barn completed with a 39-foot silo. Henry Chin had a crew at work building a whole set of farm buildings south of Avon. The pupils of Drake School had a vacation Thursday as the teacher had to have dental work done.
