10 Years Ago – 2014
Fall harvest was in full swing. Beans for the most part were being combined while corn was just starting. The Avon Pirate Football Cheerleaders had a chilly night of cheering as with the wind, temperatures were 30 degrees. The Avon School received a $25,000 grant from America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education to build a new science lab that will provid hands on learning for Avon students. The Bon Homme food pantry needed assistance to fill their shelves as the need for supplies outweighed what was on the shelves. Jolly Roger: September students of the month are Bethanie Nixon and Zach Wynia. Players of the week included Kylen Swanson for cross country; Lexi Olson, Hanna Powers, Sami Dejong and Karisa Markel for volleyball; and for football Jeremy Leibel and Liam Swanson.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Jack Brodeen had been employed full time at the Avon Clarion. He will be carrying on the Brodeen tradition as a newspaper person in Avon. He will be assistant editor to his father, Clair. The girls’ basketball team won their first game of the season 43-44 over Scotland. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Yost had a new baby girl. Kari Kraff and Johnny Jay Wynia were married in Minnesota. Jolly Roger – Mark, 7th grade, Josh 8th grade, and Christ Diede, 5th grade were all new student. Robert, Susan and Jennifer Chipman were also new students. Senior Spotlight – Dan Ridgway – his hobbies were hunting, fishing and partying. Christy Voigt – her favorite color was mint green.
56 Years Ago – 1968
The first serious frost hit Friday morning at 26 degrees. Avon won a “sweet” one over arch-rival Tripp 7-6. Neither team scored until the last quarter. High Bowling Scores for the week: Cleo Reiff – 194, Dave Dykstra – 208; Larry Pudwill – 218. Timmy Voigt was honored on his 6th birthday. June was in charge of games. Avon Band Officers are President Chris Jurrens; Vice-President Carol Pudwill; and Secretary Carla Bertus. Carla Bertus is also the Drum Marjorette. Sally Pier was honored on her birthday at her home on Saturday morning.
85 Years Ago – 1939
From now on, the following stores were not open on Wednesday evenings: F. Weidenbach, Gelfands, Ed Weidenbach, K and K Store and Stub’s Market. The First Presbyterian Ladies Aid served a Ranch Supper on Wednesday for 25 cents a plate. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Mudder have a new son, born on October 5th. Dr. Lyman Hollingsworth gave an impressive presentation to the Avon students about his two-year stay in Europe. The Snappy Stitchers enjoyed a progressive dinner with a course being served at each member’s home.
110 Years Ago – 1914
Sperry School No. 52 was in operation for a month with an enrollment of 14. An increase was expected after corn picking. A.H. Voigt had some big spuds on display at the Avon German Bank. Al Crosby brought in some cotton he grew in his garden. How’s that for South Dakota? The WCTU held a social on Thursday evening. The State Convention, music and reports were given. The last ones went home at 2 a.m.
