10 Years Ago – 2014 Resident-only pheasant season looked to be a promising opening weekend for hunters. Mrs. Podzimek’s preschool class had a special visitor, Dustin Brandt, from the Avon Volunteer Fire Department. Dustin showed and explained to the students the different parts of the uniform, how to use special tools and different parts of the firetruck that he had driven with him to the school. Local farmers volunteered their time and equipment to help the family of the late Allen Namminga harvest. 35 Years Ago – 1989 Avon GBB tourney was held in town on Thursday and Saturday. Scotland against Wagner and Avon against Lake Andes in the first round. Mrs. Mary Borin returned from a 2-week visit to her daughter in Colorado. Mellissa Voigt and Mike Petrik were married September 1st at the Trinity Church. Legion Auxiliary Bingo was Saturday night at the Legion Hall. Funeral services for Josephine Buchholz were held at the Danzig Church. Mary Bertus and Tom Manning were honored at a grocery shower. 56 Years Ago – 1968 Pheasant season opened Saturday at 12 noon. The daily limit was three roosters. Joe Maruska ran for Bon Homme County Sheriff. Ike Giedd ran for Clerk of Courts and Frank Farrar for SD Governor. F. Weidenbach Specials – Jello -3 for 29 cents; 2 pounds of wieners for 79 cents; 4 pounds of apples for 63 cents; and grapes – 23 cents a pound. 85 Years Ago – 1939 From the Nova Lite: The football team won 7-0 over their rival, Tyndall. The Pep Squad hoped to have their uniforms made during the week. The Latin Class had been studying the imperative mood. Vivian Meidinger from North Dakota was a new 8th grade student. The 7th-8th grade then had 35 pupils. Construction on the new Standard Station which was being supervised by Agner Back, was going rapidly. B.F. Dirks held a public sale on October 24th. 110 Years Ago – 1914 The German Mission Festival was well attended last Sunday, six ministers participated in the services in the morning, afternoon and evening. Mr. and Mrs. Tim Jurrens were the parents of another baby boy. Avon Hardware Company had stoves, heaters and base burners on sale. The State Teacher’s Meeting was held in Deadwood. All school days started at 9 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m.
