10 Years Ago – 2014
The theme of the 2014 Avon Homecoming Parade was “Video Games”. As it was homecoming weekend, several class reunions were held including the classes of 1969, 1974, 1975, 1964 and the 2004 AHS Championship Football Team.
35 Years Ago – 1989
There will be a Grand Opening at Dutch’s Corner on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to midnight. Door prizes and a new Game Room for kids with a tavern and pop for $1. Some 60 people gathered for the George McGovern Marker Dedication. The Pirates dropped a pair of football games this week. Chosen for All-State Chorus are Mike Voigt, Wanda DeJong, Nicole Ferwerda and Ross Romkema. Funeral services for Leonard Harmacek, age 55, were held at the First Presbyterian Church.
56 Years Ago – 1968
The McGovern house will be moved across the street on Legion property. Debbie Simek was honored on her 9th birthday. The Herb Yost family attended the Corn Palace. Get your finest engraved wedding invitations at the Clarion. Zip Feed is on sale at Cliff’s Feed Store. UBC has aluminum storm doors for $39.95. Permanent Anti-Freeze is $1.20 a gallon at Kurtz Skelly.
85 Years Ago – 1939
The 1939 School Page is called “The Nova Lite” (Nova is Avon spelled backwards) The editor is Duane Reaney. The Assistant Editor is Melba Jucht. Athletics writers are Roy Haenfler and Shirlee Meyer. Others on the staff are Laval Vesper, Lorraine Wittmeier, Joan Muller and Ruth Eggers. New Pep Squad members were: seniors – Lydia Bowen; juniors – Carol Berndt, Vilas Jurrens, Carolyn Berndt; freshmen – Vivian Weddell and Virginia Welderrich. The Pirate football team won 6-0 over Hurley on Friday.
110 Years Ago – 1914
The Avon beginner’s band gave their first concert on the street on Saturday evening. They all received a treat at Hagarty’s. Colonel Thatcher will speak at Avon Oct. 3rd at 3 p.m. in regard to the building of the Washington Highway. The Fair Store has: coffee for 25 cents; can of tomatoes for 11 cents; 2 cans of pork and beans for 15 cents. They trade for butter and eggs.
