10 Years Ago – 2014
Homecoming candidates for King and Queen were announced. Candidates were Amanda Reiff, Shayna Kohl, Randi Hento, Evianna Blaha, Samantha Pfarr, Cole Fillaus, Cody Namminga, Kole Beeson, Jesse Chambers and Logan Mudder. Joshua Knodel and Cole Fillaus were featured in The Jolly Roger in that week’s senior spotlight. Joshua said that he would be remembered as being a twin. Cole said that he would be remembered for making everybody smile. Football players of the week were Devin Tolsma with seven carries, 176 yards, four touchdowns, two punt returns, and one kickoff return for a touchdown; and Logan Mudder 10 tackles and 42 yards passing. The entire Lady Pirate Volleyball team was the volleyball player of the week because they pulled together and worked as a team. Bachelorette of the Month was Courtney Lee Steward who wanted a guy that was fit, had an accent, taller than she was, was nice and smells good.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Little Jennifer Winckler, 8th grade, has been the high point getter for the girls’ basketball team. However, the girls lost to Freeman 64-47 and also to Armour 50-43. The Pirates won 16-6 over Andes in football. The So and So Club met at the home of Margaret Hornstra. Julie Kocmick and Jay Mudder were engaged. The Avon Flower Club met at the home of Gert Bach. Winners of Ron’s Market for the FB Games were Helen Fathke, Robert Palsma, and Reta Ridgway. The George McGovern Marker in the NW corner of the park will be dedicated this Sunday.
56 Years Ago – 1968
12 new members joined Trinity Presbyterian Church and were in the Confirmation Class: Belinda Carpenter, Carol Jacobs, Karl Raysby, David Walkes, Robert Oorlog, Doug Dykstra, Gary Bartunek and Otto Bachman. Memberships by transfer were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bartunek and Mr. and Mrs. Nels Kvanli. Church Ministers: First Presbyterian – Pastor Ernest Nelson; Trinity Presbyterian – Pastor Calvin Siemsen; Friednesberg – Paster Peter Quiring; Wesleyan – Elmore Blaine, MN; Danzig – Elmore Blaine, interim; First Baptist – Pastor Walter Sukut; and Zion Lutheran – Pastor John Rische.

James Sheffield recently purchased the McKenna farm by Kingsburg. Ralph and Irene Voigt, Pete Fisher and Mrs. Philip Genant went to a funeral in Valentine, NE. Mr. and Mrs. Len Meyer and family went to LeMars to visit the Geo Pyper family. J.A. Boese and son Dwain went to the Minnesota State Fair. Mr. and Mrs. Les Thesenga of Aberdeen visited here over Labor Day. Mr. and Mrs. John Tjeerdsma had a baby boy.
110 Years Ago – 1914
Heil and William Kiehlbauch shot 29 ducks and 16 prairie chickens on the opening day of hunting season. These gentlemen were not asleep. Heil was reported to get two hens with one shot.
