Wagon train celebrated 125 years with a 17-day trip through South Dakota. Daniel Van Gerpen and Layla Hanash were united in marriage. The Pirate’s football team had a rank of #4 in the 9B poll. The Lady Pirate volleyball team had a record of 2-2 for the start of their season.
35 Years Ago – 1989
The Pirates lost their opener 56-20 to Alpena-Woonsocket. Ridgway had 93 years and scored 2 touchdowns. Avon’s school enrollment is 250. The girls’ basketball team has 4 returning lettermen, Charlene Premus, Christy Voigt, Marcia Ridgway and Teresa Roth. Robert Beaudoin of Wyoming and Larry Jenison of Iowa spent a few days with their mother. The Bud Voigt family had a picnic at the park on Sunday. Julie Kafka and Stacey Powers were married July 28th in Wagner. Bear’s Northvue will provide free watermelon after the parade on Avon’s Main Street in the lot next to Coast to Coast.
56 Years Ago – 1968
The Corsica Comets pounded the Prates 26-7. 5,000 large mouth bass were put into Dante Lake. Gay Lynn Harmacek was honored on her 7th birthday. Her 1st and 2nd grade classmates played games and had ice cream and cake. Randy Berndt received two purple ribbons at the State Fair with a Hereford heifer and a steer. A baptismal service for 15 young people was held at the First Baptist Church on Sunday. Pam Reiff is home this week with pneumonia.
85 Years Ago – 1939
The Dante Baseball team defeated the Tabor team Sunday when the Tabor boys walked off the field in protest of a foul ball call. Weinhart of Dante, the pitcher, allowed just one hit. The Tabor Club refused to finish the game. Dante is challenging Tabor to replay the game on a neutral field. South Dakota will retain the American tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving on the last Thursday in November according to Governor Bushfield. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Lorenz had a baby daughter.
110 Years Ago – 1914
The A.C. Hanson Store will close out on September 15th. Big Sale at W.A. Hubner’s Clothing Store – coats, suits on September 12th. There were 37 tickets sold at the Avon Depot headed to Labor Day in Wagner. Reading Club will have their opening meeting on Friday night. The Van Duysen brothers were putting up hay in Charles Mix County. Take the train to the Huron State Fair.
