10 Years Ago – 2014 New staff members for the Avon School District were Becky Haenfler, Travis Seitzinger, Lauren Hayden and Tanner Wince with each getting a little spotlight in The Jolly Roger. The Avon School District had eleven new students this year including Teagan Seitzinger, Karlie Pinkelman, Dustin Matucha, Noah Watchorn, Ethan Kezena, Eli Watchorn, Xander Henson, Caleb Roy, Bethanie Nixon, Wyatt Duncan and Grace Roy. The Avon Ambulance received a LUCAS 2 Chest Compression System from the Helmsley Charitable Trust. A card shower was requested to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Melvin and Judy Ludens of Springfield. 35 Years Ago – 1989 A tail gate lunch was served September 1st at the football game. Beef sandwiches, chips and a pop for $2. Jennifer Bridge was honored on her birthday at her grandparents’ home. Mellissa Voigt was honored at a bridal shower at the Trinity Church. Trudy and Kenny Crouse had a new grandson, Colin. Parents are Linda and Chris Cassard of Oregon. Amanda Dykstra of Yankton spent a few days with her grandma, Erma Dykstra. 56 Years Ago – 1968 The Pirates won the season opener 13-7 over the Tabor Cardinals. Don Sternhagen copped first place and Jim Knoll was third at the Wagner Horse and Rider Division at the Wagner Horse and Rider Division at the Labor Day Parade out of 239 entries. The Avon Saddle Club with just 9 members won third place. Robbies Corner Store – 3-pound packages of oleo for 59 cents; tomato soup 10 cents a can; 2 pounds of butternut coffee - $1.35; 10 pounds of potatoes for 39 cents; 1 pound of bacon for 29 cents; and pot pies were 6 for $1. 85 Years Ago – 1939 M.R. Jenison returned from Nashville, TN where he had spent the week with his son, Raymond, who was seriously ill. One of Avon’s local merchants, Pat Crosby, had a large exhibit of Avon products at the Hutchinson County Fair in Tripp. Pat never misses an opportunity to “boost” Avon. 110 Years Ago – 1914 Herman Van Gerpen shelled 3,000 bushels of corn last week. Miss Lora Hold had opened a millinery shop north of the Community Hotel. A large crowd gave Mr. and Mrs. Jake Heil a farewell party. They left on Tuesday for Jeffers, MN. Perkins beat the Monroe ball team 8-5. Pete Lorenz had a display at the Bank of Avon, showing six big ears of white corn. The Avon School will open its doors next week.
