10 Years Ago – 2014
Pioneer Seed invited customers to irrigated corn and soy bean fields south of town at Joel Namminga’s property to compare new varieties to existing ones. The American Legion as well as the American Legion Auxiliary retired 137 flags at their annual riverside ceremony. The Avon Fire Department held their 4th annual truck/tractor pull. The Josties, an 11-piece family band to hold a concert at the Avon City Park on September 7th.
35 Years Ago – 1989
School was to begin on September 5th. Sunday, August 27th is the last day at the pool. Funeral services were held for Virgil Eggers. Cork and Leola Lukkes were honored on their 40th Wedding Anniversary with a family barbecue. Ron’s Market is holding a football and basketball contest. Guess the total score of each game for football and girls’ basketball and win a 12 pack of pop. Ties will be broken by random drawing.
56 Years Ago – 1968
The Trinity Church pulled an upset when they won the Softball Tourney by defeating the Elders 3-2 and Springfield 1, 15-5. They beat the Lutherans 8-7 in the finals. The Annual Chamber Appreciation Days had about 1200 take advantage of a delicious cook out. The Avon School has an enrollment of 262 kids this year. Play Silver Dollar Bingo at Weidenbach’s. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Merkwan and girls from Winner were here for the weekend. Mrs. Dale Reiff and Mark and Mrs. Percy Coleman were in Colorado at the rodeo.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Sarah Van Asperen and Herbert Raabe were married August 24th at the Zion Lutheran Church in Avon by Reverend Pinnt. The bride wore a plum-colored suit. Mrs. Harold Engel entertained the Snappy Stitchers. All of the Avon teachers have returned from their summer vacations. A few of the rural schools opened last Monday in the hot summer days. Henry Roll reports a successful auction sale at his farm. The family is planning to move to Montana.
110 Years Ago – 1914
A chorus of 50 voices will render a cantata in the German Baptist Church on Sunday. John Bouza, the slipperiest slide player in the state, played with the Avon Band on Saturday night. There will be a ball game in Avon Saturday between Monroe and the Perkins Pumpkin rollers. Mrs. Abel Popma and children of Iowa are visiting her cousin, Mrs. Pete Hornstra. The Fair Store has back to school specials for children’s clothing.
