10 Years Ago – 2014
New teachers for the 2014- 2015 for the Avon School District were Becky Haenfler, Lauren Hayden, Tanner Wince and Travis Seitzinger. The Avon Post Office was close to closing its doors, as the Postal Service was trying to save money. The plan was to cut the hours to two, four or six with a decision to come in early January. Christy Brunken and Micah Pengitore exchanged vows. Jacob Reeves was one of three high school seniors to receive the South Dakota Association for Career and Technical Education scholarship for $500. Brooke Swier Schloss was appointed to the South Dakota Bar Associations Family Law Committee. The Avon School District started this school year off with a new security system.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Avon’s Kristi Cihak was the outstanding performer at the North-South All Star Game. The Avon Swim Team had an excellent year with 17 swimmers under Coach Stacy Siewert. Harold and May Oorlog celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Paul Voigt and Todd Rauch joined the MS 150 Bike Tour from Sioux Falls to Yankton on Sunday. Avon Locker specials: ground beef – $1.30 a pound; beef salad, $1.89 a pound; potato salad, $1.09 a pound.
56 Years Ago – 1968
School opens on Monday Aug 26th. Only one new teacher was hired for the new year. Sunday will be the last day at the swimming pool. Church softball tourney started with Springfield 1 over Springfield 2, Lutherans over the 1st Baptist, 1st Presbyterian over Danzig. The Trinity Presbyterian and the Elders game was protested due to both teams having ineligible players. A meeting was held and the game will be replayed on Thursday. The Drug Store owned by George Ulrich for 15 years was sold to Otto Poppe. The Ulrichs plan to move to Huron.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Avon Merchant Days is Friday, August 25th. Wagner Jr. Baseball team will play the Avon Juniors. Many specials at the businesses. Dr. Hollingsworth’s sons, Jim and Lyman, have been practicing medicine in Czechloslovia, but left due to political conditions and are now in England. Donavan Colby returned after spending time with relatives in Iowa. Southern State Normal School has a new dormitory for the new school season. It will hold 72 young women. A student can attend Southern for only $240 for room, board, tuition and books.
110 Years Ago – 1914
Robert Griffith, who has been on crutches, is better. W.W. Van Gerpen has a tree bearing two kinds of fruit. The plum ripens a month later than the cherry. Rudolph Engel purchased William Kiehlbauch’s barn and moved it to his residential lots. Clayton and Alice Crosby left for Sioux City to visit with relatives while their parents are in the Black Hills. An overland trip to the Black Hills was made by Dr. and Mrs. Greenfield, Mr. and Mrs. Farrell, Mr. and Mrs. Lou Crosby and Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Hornstra. They are going in two cars. Art Eggers is sporting a Hupmobile.
