10 Years Ago – 2014
Aging water and sewer lines leave the city wondering what they will do when it is time to replace them. Several local vendors could be found on main street selling their home-grown sweet corn. The Avon summer reading program ended with a pizza party. Ron and Judy Ratzlaff celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Hundreds of people showed up for the Chamber of Commerce’s Old Fashioned Saturday Night. $700 was raised for Brendan Anderson with the Celebrity Dunk Tank. The flag proudly displayed on main street was finally lit up.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Crazy Days was held August 5th. At 10:30 a.m. there was a kiddie parade and free treats at Bear’s Northvue. Specials at Bear’s are: Breakfast – biscuits and gravy for 99 cents; Noon – BBQ chips and pop 99 cents; Evening – BBQ pork, beans, coleslaw and pop for $1.99. Leonard Harmacek returned home from the VA Hospital in Minneapolis. In the Girls’ Softball Tourney, Avon defeated Scotland 12 – 1. The whole team were hitters. They lost to Tabor 2 – 8 in the second game. The next day they lost the championship to Tyndall. Hitters were Deurmier, Rauch, Eggers and Winckler. Their season record was 14 – 4. Kari Kraft and Jay Wynia were engaged.
56 Years Ago – 1968
Rick Pier celebrated his birthday with school friends which included a ball game, and a barbeque supper. Cheryl Raysby was honored on her birthday with a party at her home. The Avon girls were second at a softball tourney in Tyndall. Diane Williams pitched all the games. Hitters were Carla Bertus, Diane Hento, and Janet Janssen. The Teeners lost both games in the tourney – 2-1 to Tyndall and 19 – 5 to Lesterville. Brenda Poppe was honored on her birthday with a party.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Mrs. Dorothy Muller and family left for Deadwood to attend the Days of 76. The flagpole has been removed from the middle of Main Street. This eliminates a traffic hazard. Harold Oorlog and Mae Edwards were married. Smith’s Bakery Special on Saturday – cookies – 8 cents a dozen; rye bread – 8 cents; a loaf bun - 12 cents a dozen.
110 Years – 1914
The storm on Tuesday played some electrical freaks. George Hawkey had three horses struck and killed while in the barn. Mrs. John Brandt lost a stack of grain on lightning. Mr. and Mrs. John DeNeui were here to visit with Renke Burmas and will leave for Washington in September. Flies are here by the thousands. Get fly traps and paper at Hagarty’s. Dan Rueb is a real artist and has decorated the windows of the Fair Store. There will be a “Bankrupt Stock Sale” at the A.C. Hanson Store.
