10 Years Ago – 2014
Max and Denise Leischner announced the birth of their son, Easton Carter. There was a picture in the paper with Elmer and Burnice Tolsma standing in front of one of their corn fields with corn at least two feet taller than he and his wife. Elmer who had been farming for over 60 years had never seen corn this full or high before. Bon Homme County’s Farmer’s Union held their annual day camp where youth learned about agriculture and the impact ag has on their everyday lives.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Polly Sternhagen received ad 30-year pin for service with the US Post Office from Clayton Fillaus, Postmaster. The Avon Wesleyan Church celebrated its 110th year on July 9th. Joan Doty and Joe Fillaus were married June 17th in Wagner. The Flower Club met at the home of Sharon Bertsch with 9 members present. There were many cards of thanks printed from people enjoying the Centennial Celebration.
56 Years Ago – 1968
Will the McGovern House be saved? It still sits next to the church in Avon, empty run down, and seemingly of no use. There will be an All Star Church softball team against Dante on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Kocmich have a baby girl named Kristi Leigh. Trisha Merkwan was honored on her birthday with a dinner at her grandparents, the Steve Merkwans. Mr. and Mrs. Noel Raysby have a new baby boy.
85 Years Ago – 1939
The Avon Junior Baseball team turned in two classy hurling performances this week. In Vermillion, they lost 6-5 after leading until the fifth inning. Wepking turned in a 3 hit performance. Jim Engel led the hitters. Tuesday, Avon swamped Tripp 16-4. The game was called because of darkness. Crosby hurled and so did Wepking. The first game will be Avon Jr. vs. Yankton Jr. and the second game will be Gayville vs. Avon Men. Family pricing is 35 cents and a single entry fee for 20 cents. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Heib are the parents of a baby boy born on Tuesday. He weighed almost 10 pounds.
110 Years Ago – 1914
A ball game featuring the married men against the bachelors will be held on Tuesday, July 28th. The game is called for the purpose of raising funds to help the baseball team. Admission will be men – 15 cents, women – 10 cents and children – free.
