10 Years Ago – 2014 Corn growing in a field south of Avon was knee high by the 4th of July. The skies lit up as the fireworks show was held at Tolsma’s Cove. Janel Tolsma did the commentary for the Minnow Races that were held at Tolsma’s Cove. The Tyndall Accordion Club held a free will concert in the Avon City Park. Tyler Miller and Jenna Rothschadl announced their engagement. A new mat was being put on Highway 50 from west of Avon to just south of Tyndall, backing up traffic in its wake. Chesney Nagel and her horse, Scout, qualified for the National High School Rodeo in Rock Springs, WY. 35 Years Ago – 1989 Over 2,000 people are expected for the big SD 100th Birthday Celebration. Registration will be at Centennial House starting on Thursday afternoon, Friday July 7th and Saturday, July 8th. Friday afternoon and evenings are individual class reunions and Avon Mets ball game. Saturday morning is “Arts in the Park”, school tours, art exhibit at the Bank, local talent on the Freedom stage and a Style Show. At 5:00 the banquet the school for Graduates through 1953 and at 7:00 the banquet for classes 1954 and up followed by a dance at 9:00 featuring Myron Lee and the Caddies. On Sunday there will be a Community Church Service. At noon a golf tourney and tours of Avon homes. Virginia Becker and Brian Ballard were married June 17th at Springfield. 56 Years Ago – 1968 The Avon Mets won 11-9 over DO YOU REMEMBER? Tabor with Don Baker pitching 8 innings and Sattler coming in the ninth. The Jr. Legion lost 15-5 to Lesterville. Hubner was pitching but added a home run to a losing cause. The Midgets won 18-1 over Tabor. Rick Brodeen and Tim Johnson pitched. Johnson had 3 hits. The Pee Wees won 6-4 over Tabor. Steve Sternhagen pitched and he and Keith Dykstra were the leading hitters. Pam Brodeen and Grant Uecker were married June 28th at the First Presbyterian Church. 81 attended the Mudder reunion held at the Kenny Mudder home. 85 Years Ago – 1939 Doane Robinson, State Historian, has written a history on the State Capitol. The Lutheran Ladies Aid will sponsor an ice cream social in the church on Saturday, July 15th at 8 p.m. The Snappy Stitchers met at the home of Mrs. Chester Betz. Mrs. Chester Steckler and Mrs. Cecil McLane were honored on their birthdays. Many farmers have started small grain threshing operations. The outlook is small but the hot weather has not injured the corn. 110 Years Ago – 1914 The Fair Store Specials – 4 pairs of gloves for 25 cents; 4 pairs of socks for 25 cents; Gingham for 6 cents a yard. The Ladies of Avon have made a lawn tennis court on the school grounds. A Lawn Social was held at the country home of W.A. Luke on Friday. E. G. Hardwoods have twins, a boy and a girl. Mr. Henry Becker has a new top buggy. The new electric light plant is now in operations by John Burbeck.
