New wind farms that are being constructed north of Avon were running into some glitches when it came to modifying the substation’s ability to handle the new amount of electrical input. Amanda DeJong and Tyler Leighton announced their engagement. Avon Girls 10U placed 3rd in their softball tournament.
35 Years Ago – 1989
About 100 people gathered on Sunday for the dedication of the Centennial tree and Monument at the school. It was installed for the memory of the deceased AHS graduates. Hundreds of balloons were released. The Chamber will offer hotdogs, Pepsi and popcorn for 25 cents each on Main St. July 1st. On July 4th an old timer’s baseball game will be held with free watermelon and fireworks. Bear’s Northvue Cake will have an Outdoor Centennial Concession Tent on July 7-8-9 that seat over 250. All you can eat buffets: Friday noon – U Top EM Burgers ---$1.99; Friday evening – Picnic (sandwich, beans, chips) -- $4.50; Saturday – Brats, coleslaw, and drink -- $1.50; July 5 – Mexican Buffet -- $3.99: July 6 – Spaghetti -- $3.20; July 7th – Chicken -- $3.99.

A toddler’s swimming class will be held on Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30. The Mets won their 2nd game of the season 6-0 over Lesterville. Jon Westling had 3 hits. Mary Brandt and Larry Nelson were married in Huron. Kathy McKenzie and Paul Lessek were married at the First Presbyterian Church. They will be living in New York. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Van Gerpen of Yankton were honored at an Open House Wedding Anniversary. Mrs. Neil Hornstra was the bridesmaid.
85 years Ago – 1939
The local Avon baseball team won 11-1 over Tripp. There was no 4th of July Celebration in Avon this year. The Avon Band will stage its weekly concert on Saturday evening instead of Wednesday. The front of Weidenbach’s U and I store received a new coat of paint. Darrell Radack and Lawrence Weidenbach are the artists. The Community Theater is showing a Roy Rogers film on Saturday and Sunday.
110 Years Ago – 1914
Professor Larson left for Fargo to go to summer school. He will return this fall for his duty as Principal. The barber shop will be closed on July 4th. John Thesenga Prop. Avon will soon be lighted by electricity. The plant is almost ready. Avon defeated the Yankton baseball team 4 – 1. Avon’s 2 Big Days were a huge success. A big tent dance was held each evening.
