10 Years Ago – 2014 The 66th Annual Czech Days was to be held in Tabor on June 19th – 21th. The Avon track was stripped the past week by Fisher Track of Iowa. Pastor and Mrs. Terry Majors gave a presentation on their missionary work in Haiti at the Friedensberg Bible Church. The city-wide rummage was held this past Friday along with a Pancake Feed. 35 Years Ago – 1989 The Avon Pool is open! First day was free with an air temperature of 90 degrees. The Mets were shut out 12-0 by the Yankton Cimpl team, they beat Lesterville 15-9 on Sunday. Kristi Curl and Daniel Sheehy are engaged. Tau Chapter of DKG met at the Northvue Café. The State Convention will be held in Sioux Falls. The Doug Kozel family of Pierre were guests in the Eugene Kozel home. Terry and Monica Schultz have a new baby girl, Natalie Ann, born May 25th. Bill and Monna Even have a baby boy, Joseph Williams, born June 5th. 56 Years Ago – 1968 Wrestling will be a new addition to the sports program this fall. It will start as an intra-mural sport with no outside competition until 1969. Swim lessons will start on Monday. The Jr. Legion lost to Tripp 2-3 in 10 innings. Dennis Dupic pitched, relieved by Bob Sattler in the 10th. Dupic had a home run. Danny Sternhagen was a patient in the Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis. Mrs. Sternhagen and Mrs. Neil Hornstra stayed at the Les Thesenga home. A bridal shower honoring Leanne Bertus was held in the Lutheran Church. 85 Years Ago – 1939 The Community Theater is showing, “I Stand Accused” Tuesday and Wednesday are family nights. Bring the whole family for 50 cents. Mr. And Mrs. Andrew Weddell and Vivian and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jonkers were visitors in the Fred Koehn home. Ted Schwarz is putting gin a new wind charger. Mr. Bill Nieuwenhuis and Mr. Siewert were to Savannah, MO to get Mrs. Siewert who was taking treatments there for a few weeks. 110 Years Ago – 1914 The English Presbyterian held their Sunday School picnic at the Walkes grove. Games and ball games were held. Ice cream and lemonade were served after a bounteous dinner. An afternoon rain was a welcome guest. Leo Cotes little girls has pneumonia. Sammy Geohring got his hand badly hurt in a cog wheel. The Old Settlers Picnic will be 2 big days in Avon on June 25th with 2 professional ball games, merry go round, band, Dutch Band and a moving picture show.
