St. Michael’s Hospital Avera broke ground for a new patient wing. Mayor Kevin Tjeerdsma accepted a check from South Central Water Development District for $1000. Brandon Kocmich placed second in the 200-meter dash, third at the 100-meter dash, and fourth place in the 400-meter dash at the State Track Meet. The Avon girls 800-meter relay placed 7th (Lauren Sees, Amanda Reiff, Chesney Nagel and Cheylee Nagel and the medley relay placed 5th (same team members as listed above) at the State Track Meet. The Community Bank held its 100th Anniversary celebration. Over 700 people attended the event.
35 Years Ago – 1989
The Mets lost to Crofton and then won 22-13 over Menno. Todd Rauch is painting the SD Centennial Logo on the side of Coast-to-Coast store. Lisa Knoll and baby Nichole were honored at a baby shower. New Babies – Mark and Maria Yost – had a boy named Taylor on May 20th Keith and Jean Janssen had a boy named Travis on May 3rd. Larry and Ruth Hento had a baby girl named Hayley born on May 29th. Shelly and Allan Miller had a son named Jordan that was born on May 15th. 56

Senator Bobby Kennedy was shot in California. County election for Sheriff shows Eggers over Kenny Mudder. State Attorney shows Zieser over Gemar. The Mets dropped their opener to Tyndall 9-8 in 10 innings. The City Library is looking for volunteers to work. See Mrs. John Engel. Please return your overdue books. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Odens have a baby girl born on June 3rd. 52 children and teachers are busy with vacation Bible School at the Trinity Church.

Mrs. John Christjans gave a birthday party for Daryl Ray’s 2nd birthday Sunday. Betty Holleman entertained some young friends for her birthday. Bakery special – 1 dozen buns for 12 cents; 1 dozen cookies for 8 cents; 1 dozen cinnamon rolls for 18 cents.

George Christjans shot a buzzard measuring 5’5” from tip to tip. Dr. Hollingsworth had five operations last week. All drivers of automobiles are warned not to exceed the speed limit in the city or they will be arrested. F. Wepking Marshall.
