Riley Namminga received the Bronze Medal in Houston, TX in the I-SWEEP contest. Joel Finck received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Saint Louis Theological Seminary. Senior Mallory Cihak was awarded the Buche Foods Underdog Scholarship. Kayla Anderson and Nathan Bierman announce their engagement. Jon Kopp qualified for the State Golf Meet.
35 Years Ago – 1989
The first Avon After Prom Party was attended by some 60 students. Every last item was auctioned off and drawings were held. It was held at Dutch’s Corner and sponsored by the Booster Club. Monday Reading Club had a 6:30 dinner at the Alma Metcalf home. The ladies wore their Centennial Clothes. Mary Borin read Centennial trivia. Secret sisters were revealed. Mrs. Sternhagen’s 6th Grade Class presented a play were each of the 27 students portrayed a famous SD person from the past. The 5th Grade recited Badger Clark poems and Dawn Namminga sang the SD State song. The event’s special guest was Alice Kundert from the SD State Committee in Pierre. The first President Ladies had a salad buffet on May 10th. The program was based on SD State Symbols and history.
56 Years Ago – 1968
New teachers for next year will be Kenneth Chapis – Title I, PE, High School Social Studies and football coach. The Ski-Hi Drive In Theater is showing “The Way West” on Fri-Sat and “The Last Safari” on Sunday and Monday. Senior Spotlight: Vicki Williams – she likes Paul Newman, Bobby Vinton, The Four Seasons and eating pickles. Carol Wiebenga – likes The Monkees, Bobby Vinton and eating pizza and pickles.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Cy Wittmeier and his boys dug out seven young coyotes in his pasture. The bounty was $3 for each. Get ready! The hoppers are hatching. Also prepare to battle the crickets. The 7th and 8th grade had a lovely banquet. The theme was “Lilac Time” and the colors were lilac and yellow. Mary Lou Ramsdell was the master of ceremonies. The 7th grade mothers prepared the meal. Melba Jucht received second place in the State Contest with an oboe solo.
110 Years Ago – 1914
Lots of gypsies were passing through the country stealing and begging. The electric movies that visited Avon were good. Jam packed crowds were at every showing. Hagarty makes his own ice cream. Try a chocolate nougat sundae. Big poles are being erected all over the city for the new electric, lighting system. The Mennonite Sunday School had 110 scholars attend on Sunday. They were vigorous and full of ginger. If you must have dogs, take care of them.
