Ethel Reiff was named the “Fan of the Year” and Lyle and Korey Mensch received the Jolly Roger Dedication at the annual Avon Pirate Awards Program. Lincoln Murdoch, a triathlete champion and seven-time USA Triathlon All-American was the keynote speaker. Mike Petrik was sworn in as the new councilman for Ward II. Taylor Van Laar and Eric Schramm announced their engagement. Darlene and Jim Nagel were honored as the 2013 Conservation Farmer of the Year. Chesney Nagel and Devin Tolsma were named to the South Dakota Elite Eight Teams; Chesney for basketball and Devin for football.
35 Years Ago – 1989
A ground breaking ceremony was held at the Zion Lutheran Church Sunday. The building will be moved across the street. Mr. Doug Benton was hired as high school principal, Brad Poppe as business instructor, and Shelly Poppe as elementary teacher. Lavern Rezac was named “Fan of the Year” at the Activities Banquet. There will be an Open House Bridal Shower for Tonia Bechtold May 21. BJ’s will be serving free Sundaes for all mothers Sunday afternoon from 2-8. Bear’s North Vue will be having a Mother’s Day Buffet with a special price for all moms at $2.95.
56 Years Ago – 1968
33 seniors will graduate Friday, May 24th. A new minister, John Rische, age 33 will start at the Zion Lutheran Church. Galen Nelson will be in charge of the Boys’ Baseball this summer. Barbara Powers will be head lifeguard assisted by Vickey Marek. The Fun Fest will be May 17th with a new Big Floor Show! Pam Brodeen and Grant Uecker are engaged. Senior Spotlight- Twila Walkes – likes to sew and read. Lennis Lukkes’s hobby is to save things he received in high school. He also enjoys John Wayne and the color red.
85 Years Ago – 1939
Mrs. Susie Sattler accidently caught her dress sleeve on a kettle of boiling water and she severely burned her arm. She is getting along nicely. The News Hound School Page – 30 rural 8th grade pupils attended a dinner given by the Freshman of Avon. May poles served as centerpieces and chocolate cars were the favors. James Johnson brought a collection of bird’s eggs to school. He told what kind they were and how the birds built their nests. The Home Economics class gave a supper for their mothers.
110 Years Ago – 1914
B. White of Sioux City is wiring houses in Avon preparing for the electric lighting plant. William Sieling has accepted a new position at the Milwaukee Depot. Fred Wepking will now be the new Chief of Police in Avon as Rhurek has resigned. A gang of gypsies made their way through Loretta. The Avon baseball team has several games scheduled. They play at Springfield today.
