10 Years Ago – 2014
Avon American Legion Commander, Kenny Powers, awarded Lester Gramkow, Clayton Wittmeier and Jim Yonkers with 60-year membership certificates. The first week of April saw spring storms with snow and 50-60 mile per hour winds. Avon senior, Chesney Nagel, was selected to the Class B Girls Basketball All-State First Team.
35 Years Ago – 1989
Gasoline prices have taken a jump. A photo of the gas pump sign shows: Regular $1.06 and No Lead $1.03. Scott Brandt was selected head boys’ baseball coach for Pee Wee and Midgets and Dave Mudder for Teeners and the Legion teams. Tonia Bechtold will coach the girls’ teams. Connie Reiff is student teaching math at Wakonda High School. Senior Spotlight – Joy Radack enjoys pizza and her favorite teacher is Mr. Bechtold. Tina Pelton likes cheese balls and Mt Dew. Her goal in life is to be rich and successful and marry a gorgeous guy.
56 Years Ago – 1968
The Avon Easter Cantata will be given on April 7th. Mrs. Don Griesbach is the director with Joyce Finck as the accompanist. High Men’s Bowling Score – Neil Hornstra, 220; Don Fennema, 223; and Larry Pudwill 204. Rodney Bartunek celebrated his 8th birthday with a supper at his home. School was closed on Wednesday due to a spring blizzard. Senior Spotlight- Fred Hebner’s hobbies are hunting and girl watching. He likes Peter Fonda and Nancy Sintra.
110 Years Ago – 1914
If you missed hearing the lecturer last Thursday, just go out back of the barn and kick yourself three times. It was one of the best ever heard. Dr. Hollingsworth returned home from Chicago and is back at his practice. Johnnie and Willie Nieuwenhuis spent Friday evening at the Seiget Green home. Drake School and Koupal are closed this week due to sickness. Pleasant Valley is closed for the year.
