10 Years Ago - 2014 The first real snow accumulation of the year hit the area. Dorothy Walkes and Lila Shaefer held card showers for their 85th birthdays. Leonard and Beverly Ratzlaff celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Avon held their annual science fair. Jacob Cihak competed at the Wagner Knights of Columbus Free Throw contest and advanced to the state competition. 35 Years Ago – 1989 The Avon Boosters met with 23 present. They are planning a post prom party and a Freshman BB Tournament. Dorcas Circle met at the Gert Steckler home on Thursday. Mary Borin had the lesson. Senior Spotlight- Michelle Oorlog- she likes to hang out with friends and talk on the phone. Supervisions at the Music Contest were: Instrumental- Adam Ramsdell, Nicole Ferwerda, Vocal- Doyle Becker, Lester Becker, Sheila Romkema, Nicole Ferwerda, the Mixed Ensemble and the Brass Sextet. The BB cheerleaders held a clinic for girls age 3 to 6th grade. Over 60 girls attended and performed at the boys’ basketball game. 56 Years Ago – 1968 Over 300 attended the school meeting on Reorganization. Speakers for Avon were Chester Fathke, Johnnie Reiff, Roland Van Gerpen and John Engel. Funeral services were held for Art Eggers and Mrs. Pauline Marek. The lowly Springfield Trojans pulled the upset of the season as they beat highly favorite Tyndall Panthers in the District 26 Championship. Senior Spotlight- LuEllen Fennema-she likes pizza, the color green and Dick Van Dyke. Marjorie Eggers-her most exciting experience was living in Germany for 2 years. 85 Years Ago – 1939 School Page- Here are the definitions of some students according to their initialsLeona Jurrens – Love’s Joy Norma Doran – Never Daring Willis Engel- Little Nuisance James Muller-Jolly Man The volleyball tourneys have been held. The senior and sophomore won and will play each other on Thursday. The band and glee club concert will be held March 31st. Singing solos are Alice Bochman, Shirlee Meyer, Duane Reaney and Burnell Peterson. 110 Years Ago – 1914 It was 17 below zero on Tuesday. Joe Scharf and wife are here to take over the management of the Fair Store. Hornstras are having their general store enlarged at Dante. Following the regular Mexican lesson of the Avon Reading Club in March 6th, a Spelling Contest will be held. Everyone is invited to take part. Mrs. J. Winfield Meyer will be teaching voice and piano at the J. Schroder residence.
