10 Years Ago – 2014 Jeff Wepking , Avon Industrial Technical Instructor was honored by the S.D. Technology Education Association for his 37 years of teaching. Sammi Brodeen played Carrie Ingalls Swanzey, sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder in the Wax Museum this past week during the science fair. A card shower was held in honor of Loyola Myers celebrating her 88th birthday. There was a five generation picture of great-great grandmother, Bernice Heusinkveld, great grandmother Sharon Van Gerpen, grandfather, Doug Van Gerpen, mother, Lindsey Fathke and baby, Daxton Fathke. The Lady Pirates entered the district tournament with a ten straight game winning streak. 35 Years Ago – 1989 Column Rite - by Clair Brodeen. “An average salary for a major league player a half million dollars! No wonder it cost nearly $20 to get a bleacher seat. This is crazy!!” Three teachers have resigned for the next school year. They are Dale Larson, Principal Loyola Myers and Nancy Klimisch. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Yost spent several days in the Herb Yost home. The flu bug has hit with 42 students missing school Monday. 56 Years Ago – 1968 Avon lost 37-36 in District play to Platte. Bob Jacobs put up a last second shot that failed to drop as the buzzer sounded. High scores in bowling this week: Polly Sternhagen – 202 Lenore Williams – 200 Neil Hornstra – 220 John DenOuden – 200 Kristi Borin was chosen as the Rose of Delta Sigma Pi at USD. Senior Spotlight- Sandy Eben- she likes chili soup, daydreaming and reading. 85 Years Ago – 1939 The members of the First Presbyterian Church served a dinner Sunday in honor of the new minister and wife, Rev and Mrs. Bullock. About 100 were in attendance. A pantry shower was also held. Glen Peterson had his car stolen while in Utica when he was in a restaurant. While coasting at the sleighing party, Clarence Haywood ran into a tree stump and got some cuts on his face. The 8th grade pupils surprised their teacher, Miss Amelia Weldenbach on her birthday. Ice cream and cake were served. 110 Years Ago – 1914 The 6th graders had a heated debate Tuesday. The question was: Who was the greatest man, Lincoln or Washington? The Ladies Aid of the Presbyterian Church came out well on their supper. A meeting to organize a baseball team will be Friday at 8:00 at the City Hall.
