10 Years Ago – 2014
Gerald and Wilma DeRoos celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. The city of Avon was recovering from a polar vortex which caused several water lines to break around town. The girls’ basketball player of the week for the Corsica-Stickney game was Ariana Oorlog scoring 11 points and 3 rebounds. Player of the week for the Hartington Cedar Catholic was Chesney Nagel with 27 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. Player of the week for Irene-Wakonda was Heidi Cap with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Boys’ basketball player of the week standout for games against Corsica-Stickney, Hanson, and Parkston was Logan Mudder with an average of 17 points and 9 rebounds a game. Chesney Nagel was featured in the week’s senior spotlight.
25 Years Ago – 1999
Robert Moser and Sara Voigt were selected to play in the Quad State Honor Band. The D.A.R.E program graduated 28 sixth graders which was sponsored by the Avon Legion and the Bon Homme County Sheriffs Office. Kenneth Powers of Powers' Furniture and Appliance was presented with a certificate of Distinguished Service by the South Dakota Retailers Association. Bleachers were installed in the Avon auxiliary gym. Paul Rezac was featured in the week’s senior spotlight.
35 Years Ago – 1989
The Centennial Committee met with 13 members present. The co-chairs are Greg Hubner, Alice Marek and Trudy Crouse. Ambulance Bingo will be held in the gym. Mr. and Mrs. Terry Wiebenga have a baby boy, Frank David was born January 20th. A bridal shower for Lisa Goeken, bride of Dan Jerke was held at the Lutheran Church. The seniors selling raffle tickets for their trip to Kansas City. Senior Spotlight was Sandi Odens who enjoys exercising, sports and pizza.
56 Years Ago – 1968
The hot shooting Pirates poured it on by beating Menno 67-44. Coach Christjans played everyone on the bench. Winners in the city bowling tournament: 1st: Louie Dykstra and Don Sternhagen-1263; 2nd – Ted Fennema and Dave Dykstra-1218; 3rd Dick Pier and Ludd Bertsch-1173. The NorthVue Café has new owners, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Parmley, Mrs. Parmley is the daughter of Ray Webers. Mark Reiff and Erin Pier both celebrated their big days.
85 Years Ago – 1939
In 1939, a serial story was printed by one chapter in each issue. In Jan., the story “Crucible” by Ben Williams was printed. A picture was also printed with each chapter. Yes! Luden’s Cough Drops are a natural choice when you have a cold. They are 5 cents a box. Always carry Tums for quick relief for acid indigestion.
110 Years Ago – 1914
Grocery special at the Avon Mercantile is 4 large boxes of cornflakes for 25 cents; large can of tomatoes for 10 cents; large can of apples cost seven and half cents. L. Kolish sold his farm to Christ Vilhauer for $100 an acre. The dance at Avon Thursday was one of the best dances ever. Hereafter all pupils that are tardy or absent will need to bring a written excuse.
