Mr. and Mrs. Vern Dvorak celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The Avon Pirates high school boys’ basketball team lost to Dakota Christian 48-57, but picked up a much-needed win against Scotland with a scoreof49-24.LoganMudder led the Pirates with 16 points andBrandonKocmichhad13 against Dakota Christian. In the Scotland game, Kocmich led with 18 points followed by Mudder with 11 points. TheLadyPirateshighschool basketball team went into the week with a 7-0 record, but fell to Hanson 39-38 and Mount Vernon 60-55. In the Hansongame,ChesneyNagel led the team with 15 points. Nagelalsoledtheteaminthe Mount Vernon game with 22 points with Ariana Oorlog and Heidi Cap adding 13 and 11 points respectively.
25 Years Ago - 1999
Avon’s gymnasium hosted a fundraising basketball game between the KELO-Tv All-StarsandtheAvonShooting Stars to raise money for theCTAPlaygroundRenovation Project. Thegameended in a tie. Jennifer Finck and Bryan Dingsor announced their engagement. Rick and Lynn Knoll welcomed a son, Ethan Evert. The Avon Lady Pirates placed fourth in the Alcester volleyball tournament. The Pirates basketball team lost 60 -65 against Bon Homme with Tom Podzimek leading the team with 22 pointsandChadDeJongwith 14 points. The Pirates also played Gayville-Volin and blew them out of the water with a final score of 76-47. Dejong led the team with 23 points and Craig Wielenga had 18 points for the Pirates.
35 Years Ago – 1989
The Pirates won over Parkston 72-66 and against Stickney 94-96 in an exciting triple overtime game. The Monday Reading Club met at the home of Florence Krug.GertBachhadtheprogram. Mr. and Mrs. Crouse returned from Las Vegas on Saturday. Funeral services for Elsie Johnson, 76, were heldattheFirstPresbyterian Church. Sheleaveschildren. Avonlockerspecials:1pound of ground beef for $1.39; minute steak $2.29; loaf of bread $0.60; and a half gallon of ice cream $1.69.
56 Years Ago – 1968
A good Kingsley-Pierson basketball team downed the Pirates 74-69 in overtime on the Iowa floor. Bob Jacobs had ten straight points. He ended with 21 points and 17 rebounds. The Iowa coach is Avon’s Vernie Pinnt. Temperatures ranged in the 50s this week. A farewell for Reverend D. Zimmerman and family was held at the Danzig Church. Funeral services were held for Ben HallattheFirstPresbyterian Church. Hall had bought the telephone company here and built the Northvue Motel, Café, and Service Station. In the Jolly Roger Senior Spotlight, Jim Arlt remembers Halloween as an exciting time and Jane Brandt likes ElvisPresley,food,candyand the color blue.
